Post American McGee's Alice, part deux
A follow up to the awesome American McGee's Alice game is coming in 2011. The original was awesome and dark and evil.

The original indeed was awesome. I'm just worried this is McGee's way of rekindling the critical/corporate love for him by simply redoing his greatest achievement, as the original Alice seemed kind of done. I mean, his past few games weren't exactly big hits. *cough*bad day LA*cough*

hehe... I just like evil alice. :D I wish people would redo more classic childhood tales with a dark and evil twist. An evil version of Through the Looking Glass wouldn't be too difficult. But that won't happen. I guess I'll have to make do wtih Resident Evil: Modern Combat and Tiger Woods' Grand Theft Madden.

There's a review of the new Alice game on Ars Technica:

Ultimately, great game, awesome art direction, levels are a bit long and repetitive. Which, funny enough, actually reminds me of how I felt about the original game.

So, I finally finished the game. Took me 18 hours. A quick synopsis

1. It's a 3rd person, behind the avatar-type platformer with combat. Most of the game is spent killing things and jumping around / solving puzzles.
2. There are mini games from time to time... there's one where you slide down a slide and try not to hit bad stuff. There's one where you slide around parts in a puzzle to finish the puzzle in x moves. There's a 2d side scrolling part. There's a part that's like bowling. Etc. The first time or two you play a minigame, it's fun... after awhile, it gets boring and/or annoying.
3. The art direction is absolutely stunning.
4. The story is interesting. It's about a chick that's lost her marbles, and the whole game has a totally psychotic feel. Good stuff.
5. The levels are long, and the worlds are even longer. Too long really. They could've halved the gameplay to 9 hours and that would've been about perfect.

Anyway, I took a bunch of screenshots. Actually, like 114. So, I threw em in a picture gallery. Check it out. If you're thinking about playing the game and don't want to be spoiled, don't look at the pics. One of the best things about the game is the discovery.

*ventures into the picture vault*

I'm not actually linking to pics, just writing down impressions as i'm going through the pics :)

- love the ship in a bottle and its davy jones like captain
- love alice's 'pirate' dress (or is it fish scales?)
- alice's character model looks pretty good. Better than I expected from the first pic in the gallery. Other human models seem to look good too
- featus cabaret?!
- geisha statue crying blood wow
- this must be the 2D platforming you mentioned
- hah a chinese script scroll bridge...really cool
- that huge gargoyle/demon face in the wall with water running from his/its mouth, why isn't something like that used in more games? Has a great effect.
- card castle looks pimp as hell (as does Alice's spade dress)
- insane asylum heh
- freaky fucking dolls
- weird ass antichrist hatter

Pics look great, and the art is amazing at time. Almost makes me want to play it. :) The problems you described are putting me off a little tho, since I seem to be having a hard time doing 'redundant' actions of late. I actually quit a game (Recettear) again because it was repetitive and grindy. And of course, I'll wait until it's really cheap anyway. ;)

Did you just say I liked Super Meat Boy? I fucking hated the shit out of that POS game! Haha, no but seriously, it's the only game in years that actually managed to get me to rage in terms of how horrible I thought it was.

And VVVVVV is a masterpiece. :P It's not repetitive at all, and as far as the grinding goes it has savepoints every 5 seconds pretty much...the music is boss, the design is great, and the game has a heart. Meh i know you guys will never play it anyway since it doesn't have DX11 and Shader 3.0 graphics :P (half kidding).

Generally speaking, I don't mind doing something a few times. It's mostly when it's coupled to a lack of savepoints or quicksave that I start to rage. My idea of fun isn't doing the same 5 minutes of gameplay over and over again because I can't save. It's a console disease to increase a game's length artificially.

I played vvvvvv for a little while. But yea, it's not my style. And, like you, I have no patience for playing several minutes only to die... again and again. Screw dat, dawg. Anyway, get Alice dude! Maybe some day when it's like $2.
