So I go to the DMV yesterday...
and it smells like someone took a big fat crap in the middle of the room and noone bothered to clean it up
(the DMV is the Department of Motor Vehicles for you non-American's, a place where you get your drivers license renewed. )

jeez man, why don't you just renew over the internet or phone or something? I won't be caught dead in a DMV office.

Since we're talking about cars: does everyone on this forum has his drivers license already?
And 11b, can't see why you didn't do it online right away. But how does it work, we don't have to renew our license, ever. So in america you have to renew it every x years or what? Any reason for that?

err...I got my license 11 years ago.
Yes, you have to renew it every couple years. You don't have to retest or anything, just get a new picture. Probably solely so that the government can rape you for a little extra cash.
If they did it every, say, ten years, and made you retest again, it'd make sense to me. As it is, it's retarded.
Oh, I think I have a German driver's license too. And a hunting license.

Every 4 years in my state. It only costs a couple bucks. Not enough to make any money considering the cost in materials and labor to process it. It keeps your picture up to date and you have to take a vision test. If you don't renew on time you have to retest. I agree that there should be mandatory retesting. It should also be a lot tougher. Nearly got splatted today by some jerk that didn't understand the concept of 'yielt to crosswalk traffic'.

I have a provisional liscence for both car and bike, plus my CBT for a motorcycle, but that runs out sometime late this month/early next month.

provisional? Is that like a training license? CBT kinda sounds like a motorcycle license. Blah. Anyway, satan is a good friend of mine. err...yes, morons piss me off. I had the urge to kick in some guy's tail light who had a similar lack of understanding about crosswalks and pedestrians. Except he wasn't going very fast until he saw us crossing, then sped up. Bastard. I really should get a concealed handgun license. That way if someone hits me with their car I can shoot them and claim fear for my life.
