This is all you need to do.

Put but computers in the same workgroup IE: MSHOME
Put both computers on the same IP subnet IE:
PC
192.168.0.1
255.255.255.0

Laptop
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0

Make sure both computer have different names IE:

PC
LAPTOP


Turn off that stupid Windows Firewall thing in the properties of your network card.

Im not totally sure but I dont think you need a crossover cable. I use a switch/router.

Put but computers in the same workgroup IE: MSHOME

Right click on "My Computer"
Select "Properties"
Click "Computer Name"
Select "Change"
Change the workgroup name there

Make sure both computer have different names IE:
For the same window above, you can change the name.

Put both computers on the same IP subnet IE

Click "Start"
Click "Control Panel"
Double click "Network Connections"
Right click "Local Area Connection" or what ever you connection is
Select "Properties"
Highlight "Internet Protocal TCP/IP"
Click "Properties"
Check "Use the following address"
Type 192.168.0.1
Press the tab button on your keyboard, this will fill in the subnet.
If your just hooking these computers up without trying to get them on the internet (which I am assuming you are) then dont worry about the gateway.
Click "Ok" which closes the properties window.
Select "Advanced"
Uncheck "Protect my computer...." this is the BS firewall
Click "Ok"
Click "Ok"
