Re: Dead Island
I can't wait for this game. There's a few games I'm looking forward too, so I gotta start saving - but there this, Batman, Battlefield 3... Man! Need a second job!

Re: Dead Island
But then you wouldn't have the time to play all those games! Catch-22!

Re: Dead Island
True that! But I got promoted today so hopefully the need for a second job has now ceased! Let the gaming begin!

As soon as my capture card comes and the game turns up at work, I'll be posting videos on YouTube about this!

Re: Dead Island
There's a review on Ars. It says the game is fun, but buried under a blanket of bugs and problems. Probably one to hold off on for a few patches. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011 ... e-oven.ars

Re: Dead Island
Yeah gametrailers pretty much said the same thing, incredibly fun but not exactly bug free and a crappy story. Co-op is meant to be great though

Re: Dead Island
An island, horde of zombies, survivors. Doesn't need to be Sherlock to figure out the plot.

Re: Dead Island
I've heard a few people in store today saying that in some regions they've shipped out the wrong version of the game?! Maybe it's just their cover up for the mistakes though.

Re: Dead Island
Well then, time for a brief run down of my play through from levels 1-7. Aprx 2 hours play to reach level 7, then I got my next char up to level 3.
The graphics:
Nice, do the job - some lovely scenery and great gore/limb/flesh destruction. Environment is pretty damn solid though, very little breaks or damages other than what is supposed to - car windows etc.
They ain't no battlefield, but they're nice enough and give you the same sort of feeling that farcry 1 gave us that first time we looked out to the glorious seaside landscape.
The sound:
Really like the sound track so far, well, I say sound track - the ambient noise is a better way to word it. Seems like it'd be good with head phones on at a couple of points too. However, the voice acting whilst not particularly bad - is not supported by a bit of naff script writing. For example "That man just saved your life. You owe him your life." Just doesn't flow as naturally as my alternative, which was "That man just saved your life, you owe him yours."
Satisfying bone crunches and squelching of pummelled flesh make up for this though - and when you get some sweet hits it really plays off nicely.
The gameplay:
To be honest - it's a lot better than I expected. The expectations [especially on console] were horrible aim and sluggish controls - none of which seems to be present! I have yet to use a pistol myself, but my friend on xbox live [GodLikeRossi] has and didn't seem to have any issues. On top of this, there are two ways you can use the [awesome] melee weapons - Analogue or Digital. Digital is just point and shoot, analogue gives you control over the direction of the swing. Analogue is a little slower, so in some of the nasty situations it's not so good - but when it comes to delivering sweet ass power shots it's freakin' amazing. For example, the Analogue mode allows me to cut straight across. This comes in useful when an enemy is charging at you, and allowed me to make a NICE 1-hit-head-gone swing. Where as the digital mode, not yet having "locked on" as the enemy is far away - would have just chosen a random angle of attack.
The controls respond well overall - though the vehicles could use a little work. Nothing drastic or game breaking; just would make life a little easier on those down hill chicanes if the response time on the turning was just a tad shorter.
Grabbing hold of a lovely blunt weapon and bursting your foes head in one awesome swipe is another good feeling too.
Multiplayer is very well integrated, with as of yet no obvious glitches or errors; simply team up with mates or create a lobby and enjoy drop in drop out gameplay.
My biggest issue with the game is it sold itself as a survivor story, with people foraging for weapons and ways to survive. And sure, it has the whole "hey there's some boats here, maybe there is an oar we could use" kind feel at first but after time it's thin veil quickly drops and it feels more like you're finding placed weapons than being clever and finding them yourself. However it also becomes apparent that you benefit more from repairing and upgrading than you do from constantly picking up new stuff. Just find the best few base items you can and upgrade them, keeping them till your next item is a drastic improvement seems to be your best choice.
Overall, a good solid game that will definitely provide some good quality fun - but I think it's lacking a hard difficulty or even a hardcore 'one life' mode, so it seems to lack [so far] those HOLY SHIT moments that make games like Left4Dead or Call of Duty's spec ops mode so amazing.
None the less, I'm glad I bought it and I will post a video review as soon as my capture card arrives.
P.s. Sorry for the square parenthesis, I'm on my poorly laptop!

Re: Dead Island
Cool, glad you like it. I'm going to wait for a couple PC patches before grabbing it, but it's definitely still on my list.
Regarding the wrong build shipping, yea, I read that. Supposedly it was a beta build that shipped. Among other things, it shipped with you being able to hit Y and turn on no-clip mode. That's obviously not a good thing.

Re: Dead Island
Well i finished the game. Average game, think of Far Cry 2 with zombies. Exploring the island and doing various side quests are nice but the main plot is awful. Not in the story way but the technical execution. Too many times it follows the pattern of chop chop chop, die, chop chop chop, die, chop chop chop, die, chop, win. And it goes exactly like that. When you die you lose money but it doesn't matter much. The weapons are stupid and unresponsive unlike the zombies which always seem to glitch through your attack, kneel down next to you and bite your ankles. I mean its fucking stupid. And its always nice if you end up in a zone that has buggy "infected" spawn code where it spawns endless amount of them, and you can see them appearing from thin air.
Overall below average game.
Oh and lets not forget the magical disappearing of weapons you just threw at a zombie which glitched into a wall along with your weapon.

Re: Dead Island
I got confused then. I thought I was reading a Derf post! That sucks you had so many glitches. I've watched Mole play it a bit and it looks like it'd be fun co-op, doubt I'll touch it for single player at all though

Re: Dead Island
Apparently it's sold over a million copies so far, making it pretty well selling. I'm waiting for a sale and more patches though.
