Men of War > Magicka ;)

hehehe, not necessarily, but IS pretty damn awesome. Don't worry too much about learning the game, just give the tutorial 'campaign' a spin and you should be up to speed on the basics. Sending men around and ordering them to attack things isn't all that hard - it's mostly getting a feel for what is a realistic goal and what isn't (or how dangerous a given situation is) that requires experience.

And with me and derf in the game, you should have two relatively experienced players to ask questions to. We can tell you how to reload tanks/AT guns/infantry, how to syphon fuel from vehicles and refuel them, how to switch between ammo and weapon types, etc etc.

Btw, Derf, did you know that if you let an infantry squad's Assault Leader get ammo from a supply truck he'll automatically supply his squad members with the appropriate ammo when he gets near them? MoW = greatest war detail simulator ever. :P

Too bad you're offline. Must be running or stabbing people with a gladius. :P

Haha I went to bed early :)

And yes, I knew that... Ever notice how at the beginning of a skirmish I sprint my men over to the supply truck and suddenly empty it of all the AT nades, medkits and smoke grenades? lol

Haha, I never gave it a second thought. :P I'm not gonna try and beat you to it now, because a) your sprinting and inventory fiddling skills will have been honed to perfection by now and b) I don't have nearly the same hopes for my men's life expecentacy as you, so I'm not gonna load to them up with grenades and bandages.

Post Re: MoW: Assault Squad
Random wiki quote that's rather interesting, to me anyway:

The T-34 was among the most important weapons systems in the Red Army in World War II. At the time it was first fielded in 1940, commentators considered one of the finest tank designs in the world. By mid-war, the T-34 no longer technically outclassed its opponents, but it remained effective in combat.

The improved T-34-85 remained the standard Soviet medium tank with an uninterrupted production run until the end of the war. The Germans responded to the T-34 by introducing completely new, very expensive and complex second-generation tanks, greatly slowing the growth of their tank production and allowing the Soviets to maintain a substantial numerical superiority in tanks. Production figures for all Panther types reached no more than 6,557, and for all Tiger types 2,027. Production figures for the T-34-85 alone reached 22,559. The T-34 replaced most light, medium, and heavy tanks in Soviet service.

Interesting, huh?

Besides that, the true competitor to the T-34 (the Panzer IV) had an inferior suspension system and track breadth, meaning that it struggled badly with boggy ground. The T-34 was far more manoeuvrable.

interesting, and very Russian. with a very German response. That's also what the americans would probably do, though our M1 tank is pretty badass.

What holiday was it? Martin Luther King day or some such weird thing we don't know? It's a miracle that you even have a day off imo. ;)

So yeah, we did get together and got our asses handed to us by the AI in the battle of the bulge. :( First time was a quick rape, second time we were doing ok but then we got countered pretty unexpectedly. I lost all my stuff and my entire right flank in 30 seconds, was insane. Also, my heavy AT guns kept missing everything even from point blank, and the freaking German stugs seemed to be almost invulnerable. You'd think a heavy AT gun would pound right through those things (even Panzer III's), but apparently not. Very strange.

As a post-battle analysis, we were clearly getting raped almost exclusively by armor superiority. They were rolling in Panzer IV's and whatnot when all we could buy was Wolverines and other crap like that. Anyone have a sugestion? Buy even more heavy AT guns before moving to the second line? That seems about the only option we got, since the AI spawned shitloads of nfantry too which aren't dangerous in themselves but they do fuck up any attempts of using AT infantry to effectively ambush the tanks (I took out plenty that way, but also lost 5 guys or so to unexpected infantry fire mostly).

Post Re: MoW: Assault Squad
We surely did get raped.

I think the sheer amount of infantry caused us the biggest problems because they slowed us for far too long. The reason why infantry are so effective is because they take ages to clear if dug in and defending but also because they act as the eyes for any other unit in the enemy has, ie, enemy tanks and AT guns.

I lost control when I stupidly (or rather, naively) decided to put my 2 tanks on over-watch at the head of my army, which is not how tanks should be used IMO. The problem with this is that the enemy infantry can spot them immediately and therefore advancing tanks can and will target them immediately as a number 1 priority. Given that the Germans were rolling out Stug III's and Pz IV's with the very decent 75mm PaK gun, Sherman based armour or even my own captured Stug III with relatively weak armour couldn't take more than a couple of shots.

However what acted as the spotters for those kills was the enemy paratrooper counterattack. Remember, MoW's elite soldiers are MUCH tougher and generally kick ass compared to regular grunts, and see further etc, so that's probably what got my tanks exposed in the first place.

Sure there was some weird shit going on my end too. AT guns missing and such. Perhaps I could have used another AT gun as backup or just to cover a different arc of fire.

I was personally waiting to get more tanks repaired or wait for the points to order more, because that was the only real way I was going to dislodge the enemy infantry from their positions. So perhaps the question is how to stop the paratrooper rush. Not sure. Perhaps make more an effort to pre-spot and brace for it. I think next time we should do better by default. More experienced and less rusty, etc.
