Re: Horse meat
I know it used to be illegal to sell horse meat in a normal butcher shop in the Netherlands, so there were separate horse meat butcher stores (I'm talking about 60 years ago or so). Anyway, I thought horse meat was pretty tough meat, and considered low-class.

Re: Horse meat
LIAR!! Actually though, it can be just as tough/tender as you like depending on which part of the horse you're eating. I've eaten very stringy but also blissfully tender horse meat. It usually just depends on how much you spend on it, in my experience. I always found it tasted a lot like kangaroo meat actually.

Re: Horse meat
There's a stigma in the US that horses are cute and loving and friendly and whatnot, like cats and dogs. Thus eating horse meat is like eating a family pet. At least, that's my guess.
Personally, I'd eat any kind of meat, including horse, but I enjoy eating strange animals.

Re: Horse meat
Got horsemeat in my fridge, i think i draw the line at eating human flesh though (unless i get stranded in the Andes after a plane crash obviously).
Btw if you go to a butcher and compare prices, horsemeat won't fall in the "low-budget" area. If it would you would probably end up with the tough meat indeed.

Re: Horse meat
I'd eat human meat, just not brain. No jacked up neurological problems for me, thanks. At least, not any more than I already have.
Anyone up for a palm sandwich?

Eating your own species is generally not a good idea. Studies have linked it with deceases like and .

Re: Horse meat
In Italy it's pretty openly eaten. Very delicious too. Definitely not cheap or tough. I've tried it on pizza and a creamy pasta.
In the UK i think you can get it, but it's probably rare. Like most culinary dishes, the UK is probably just ignorant of it.
And yeah, I suspect the simple minded folks in the US probably banned it because it's not an animal commonly associate with domestication for the purpose of eating.

Re: Horse meat
I thought the prion diseases were mostly caused by eating of brain tissue, hence my aversion for brain. However, the Wikipedia article doesn't mention that, so perhaps I should stay away from menschen fleisch after all. Ah well. What if I limit my diet to asian teenaged girls?

Re: Horse meat
Cannibal snuff movies? Right...? I wish I could eat dolphin or whale. I mean, I know I CAN in some countries, it's just pretty fucked given how they're not doing particularly well in terms of demographics. The only moral stopping me from eating this or that animal is basically that they should be nearing extinction.

Re: Horse meat
I went through about 4 pages of that thread. Cuties. Many with ridiculous fake boobs. But hey, boobs aren't edible anyway.
