Learning to play with textures
Just thought I would share my latest project I am kinda having fun and frustrations with..... I'm learning how to do textures and such for clothing in games. Yay - I hope I stick with it. It looks like it can be a fun creative outlet for me. But, basically I have little clue what I am doing as of yet - just got kinda a crash course in it the other night - but it is fun yay!
Wish me luck and and advice you can pass my way cuties!

Hm, I'm not good at textures. I can do some 3d modelling, but I completely suck in 2d. So all I can do is wish you good luck.

Shiny's doing pretty well so far. I forced her to use The Gimp instead of photoshop and she'll be surpassing me in knowledge soon.

I'm not too fond of the GIMP. The tools are there, but I hate the number of windows you have to switch between. I also don't like GTK.
On the open source front, Paint.net is getting more useful with every release, and I'm quite happy with Inkscape for vector graphics (although that's based on GTK as well). Although I'm a KDE guy (at least when using Linux instead of XP) I'm not too impressed with Krita yet (nor with the rest of KOffice), but I'll see what the future holds.

I only like GTK because of what it offers. I think it's ugly, but it certainly works. I'd rather they had different skin types that more closely emulated the functionality of Windows, but bleh.
As for The Gimp, it's easily as powerful as photoshop, imo. The UI is crappy, but strangely enough there was an article about that recently:
http://developers.slashdot.org/article. ... 10/1817230
So hopefully it'll improve. It's actually not THAT bad... there are 2 Windows that need to be up besides the actual image you're screwing with... the tools and the layers. At least imo.

What bugs me most with GTK is the odd save dialogue. Today I had to use the colour picker in GIMP, yet another Window.

lol, I suppose. I just click on the foreground/background color, choose my shade, then close it. It's more like a dialog box to me than an actual window...but I hear what you're saying. Have you used photoshop? Imo it's just as bad.

I've never used Photoshop, I try to keep my computer as legally cheap as possible. I normally just use GIMP and moan about it. I was using the colour picker to find out what colour something was because I wanted to use exactly the same colour somewhere else. So I had to switch back and forth to it.
