c.1200, "glory, renown, fame earned," from Anglo-Fr. honour, from O.Fr. honor, from L. honorem (nom. honos)
so, apparently it goes back to Latin honorem.

so, in a way, American English is closer to the original Romanic version of the word.  As a something-in-between-speaker I routinely mix up American and British English spelling, expressions and words. Apart from the minor misunderstandings (chips = fries and crap) I get by just fine.
Not counting my inherent insanity, that is.
