breakthroughs in medicine?
hey, check it out....
the cancer thing...well, cool and all, but not all that unbelievable. We have 'breakthroughs' in cancer constantly. The AIDS thing, though, would be the first of its kind that I'm aware of. Imagine an AIDS vaccine. In 20 years people will be thinking of AIDS like we do of polio.

Cancer cure, never
Aids cure, never
Why? money. Think of all the people, companies, and CEO's who make billions on cancer/aids drugs and technologies. Finding a cure of those disease would put out of some serious money. There are theories out there that there are already cures for aid and cancer but they are being supressed.

in that case, I suggest we get together, overthrow the world, and make those drugs available for everyone.
then we can make new, horrible diseases, blame them on the Chinese, and rule the world with an iron thumb.

There are also theories that the earth is flat. Plus, by that logic we would never accomplish anything.

well, we'd put me in a position of power. That's an accomplishment.

Heh...I'd go with 11b's conspiracy theorism over having Satis for president. It'd be a tough question really, weighing off neat new laws against a maniac in total power.

Big corporations (espescialy big pharming) are very afraid of public opinion.
They can't afford things like this coming out, so they won't hold it back. There is also a lot (though off course much less) research done by universities. I don't see why universities or the government want to hold cures for AIDS and cancer from the public. Not universities because they have nothing to win from that, not for the government because it's very bad for the economy (also for the African economy, and poor people are a good breeding ground for terrorists, while Islam is a growing religion in Afrika).
Pharming can earn more money with old-people deseases without cancer, people without cancer tend to live longer.

There is, generally speaking, no point in holding back any kind of medicine. Simple because disease isn't a static entity but a continually developing one...so diseases will come and go (and mutate); pharmacy business will always have a use and clients. And when a business has clients, it's happy.
11B scenario
research: costs money
keeping it a secret if there's a cure: cost money
overall: corporation loses money.
other scenario
selling a cure: makes a lot of money
overall: corporation makes money.
