 Google What is it with Google? I just found out that its worth $27bn, but how exactly has it got to where it is, and how exactly is it making that amount of money? Its not getting any money from my pockets and its only a search engine. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Advertisements off course.
Those sponsored links at the right makes them a lot of money, they lisense their search software for other firms and with their new toy Gmail, you'll get ads based on the content of your emails, making a damn lot of money as well.

Google is the undisputed king of search engines right now. Others are competing, but Google is the standard.
Why are you looking for alternatives, though? Google'e been amazingly benign so far. Once they start pulling a Microsoft, that's when it's time to switch to competitors.
btw, arathorn, are you sure about the gmail ad thing? Seems a bit like an invasion of privacy.

Hey wasn`t Google going to start a web browser as well (i hope i use the correct word here), heard some rumors about it. Microsoft is prolly shitting it`s pants already.

Im not looking for alternatives. That would be like buying an MP3 player other than the iPod.
