Ok...I need any help I can get. I used to use firefox as my standard brower at work until IT overhauled my pc and now it can't connect to the net anymore and I'm stuck with crappy IE 6 (IT doesn't support the later versions of IE). Needless to say i have dire need of a better browers than IE 6. When installing firefox it won't automatically set a proxy, and when I start it up it gives me a "dear user, you must tweak the proxy settings before surfing the web" message. And tells me to contact IT, which doesn't seem very smart. So...since i can install firefox but it just won't connect to the internet I figure it must use a port or proxy or whatever that has been blocked by IT. Logic dictates that if I can import the settings of IE for these features into firefox (which has a very straightforward menu for that) it should be able to get online. Or is my bronze and stone-age level IT thinking too simple? Any help would be appreciated, because it's pretty retarded that IT only supports IE6 when firefox is clearly so much faster and safer. Two days on IE6 gave me more problems with unwanted effects (popups and shit) than Firefox ever did. Lame. |

Nevermind, I installed Chrome instead which seems to work fine with the occasional quirk. Very smooth, but I have the feeling they sometimes try to make things a little more complicated than necessary. I had to do some heavy tweaking to adjust it to my tastes. Any drawbacks I should be aware of when using Chrome? |

Well, your privacy is the biggest one. Since it's from Google, common believes dictates that using Chrome may betray your surfing habits to Google so they can sell you ads. Good times for all. Regarding Firefox, your proxy settings are in Edit -> Tools -> Options. Go to the advanced settings, then go to the network tab. Under the connections tab, click on settings. These are your proxy settings. To copy what's in Internet Explorer, go to tools -> internet options. Go to the connections tab, then click LAN settings. You should be able to make comparisons between the two proxy settings pages. |

The IE connections tab is greyed out on my pc, probably IT/admin override. So i'll just have to find the standard IE setting online and try thiose...but I must admit I'm kinda taking a shine to Chrome. It's fast and sleek And really, I don't care in the least if they monitor my surfing behavior at work. |
