Just download it manually and install it.

I've re-enabled prefetch, I read somewhere that the task scheduler service is needed for Windows prefetch to work, so I enabled that and now it's there again, like it should.
But in your XP tweak guide Satis, you state that the service is useless, so I guess it changed with SP2, and prefetch is now done by the task scheduler.
Could you check that and update your tweak guide?

just to update, i installed service pack 2 last night with no problems.
i have zonealarm pro and mcafee virusscan 8 installed, it detected them both and didn't run the windows firewall, which is nice.

Being in a job in which I support servers running network-enabled software.... XP SP2 breaks all our software. We advise our customers not to install it (just SP1) or expect virtually nothing to work any more. We're working on a fix.
On a positive note, the things that break it are:
1. XP Firewall
2. DCOM security
3. Various sundry registry tweaks
which means that a series of reg hacks is all that's required to work around the problems. It doesn't require the programs be rebuilt.

I'm not installing SP2 anytime soon...maybe after the entire world got used to it and we've moved on to a new version of windows.

K, I installed SP2 under pressure of some new games (bastards) and because I was having some very weird keyboard problems. It was a traumatic experience. I hope microsoft chokes on its cash. And wtf is all that windows firewall about, and resetting my internet security settings...bah. On the bright side, it got installed in the end. Plus, I figured out my problem which turned out to have absolutely nothing do to with windows updates, either. But I got it so I guess I should be happy. Merry freaking windows christmas to me.

I will never install sp2. I'm still dealing with fallout from that in my job. Fuckem and their pointless attempts at security. Bah. Anyway...what games wanted sp2? Shouldn't be a requirement.

I have it installed on ever computer at home and office. No problems. As long as you turn off that firewall first thing your good. Installing sp2 even fixed some weird printing issue we had at the office. And for the IE peeps the built in pop up blocker is nice.

yea, well, some (all) of the remote applications we sell use dcom as their initial transport medium, specifically dcom signed anonymously. Prior to sp2, that was fine. However, thanks to MS anonymous dcom packets are now discarded... thus, we have to do all kinds of wonky shit to get a client/server running sp2 to function properly. Fucktard bastards. *grumbles*

It wasn't really directly that they wanted me to install it, it went like this: get freaky keyboard issues in hi-end games->decided to update gfx drivers->"strongly recommended" me to install them on SP2 windows version->didn't isntall SP2, but updated anyway, didn't fix the issue (it even swarmed to other apps)->me decided to install SP2 and gfx drivers over that again. True, I overreacted. But it was still hell. I disabled the pop-up thing too, God knows what MS considers to be pop-ups.
