Post thermonuclear pwnage
ok, thought I'd start a topic for defcon, since it kicks so much ass.

Anyway, I decided to give it another go...played a quick game during lunch with me (north america) versus europe. I was beaten, but barely. They did a better job, but overall the deaths difference was only about half a million.

Just tried another scenario with me as Asia vs. Europe...and I totally pwned the crap out of em. I sailed my 12 subs around Africa during the whole thing, putting myself in a great position for european pwnage. What really made the difference, imo, is that during defcon 3 or so I used my bombers to take out 2 of the guy's silos. I also made prodigious use of bombers.

Aynway, the end result is complete and utter annihilation. The highest population in any single European city was .7 million. I bombed every single numerous times. Meanwhile, my Iranian/Indian cities got pummeled, but I was able to safeguard most of China and such.

Now for a picture of pure pwnage.
*edit* stupid screenshots chopped off the stats. Ah well, you should be able to tell I really kicked the CPU in the nads. I killed over 100 million europeans. He only killed 50-some million of my people, most of which were Indian. :p

sigh...ok...so, I may be getting more addicted. There's just something deeply satisfying about wiping millions of people off the face of the earth, especailly after a crappy day at work.

Anyway....this time I was South America going after Africa. I thought it was a good setup, but I was ill prepared for a mass nuclear launch in the gulf of Mexico. Mexcio suffered and I lost two of my silos. My fleets at sea were virtually annihilated with the exception of my subs. Until the very end, I was doing very, very poorly. I then launched a massive nuclear retalation and blasted Africa back into the stone age.

video (11mb) : http://clankiller.com/stuff/defcon2006africaowned.wmv

The video is of my final retaliatory strike. Screenie attached for final score.

Thats a tad brutal no? Is there no way to resolve things a bit more...conventionally?

Nope  To quote the sale blurb for Defcon: 'In thermonuclear war, nobody wins. But maybe, you can lose the least'. That kinda summarizes the game.

Nice vid Satis  I like the pounding Cairo is taking there, 12m dead, 6m dead, 5.5m dead...w00t! And judging by the score you did turn around a pretty hopeless situation in that one single desperate attack! Well, you clearly had coordinated it well with the bombers taking air defense fire too etc. Good stuff. :)

@ the Europe thing...I pretty much did the same thing to South America a few days ago, and it does feel pretty good...if you get lucky you can take out their silos pretty easily early on (like if they launch and your sub is right off the coast) and from there on it's just a massacre.

The problem in one on one play against the pc is that -depending on your positions- the tactical options are limited. In some situations your bombers can barely reach enemy territory, or your ships need to make a HUMONGOUS detour to get into position. Also, the best way to really hit an opponent is to do massive all-out strikes and the AI seems to clearly prefer those too. (But, as you'll probably know by now, it still requires some coordination and timing to do it well) I think that in a game with several people, the situation will be very different: you'll have to spread your units, silos and airplanes instead of all focusing them on one opponent.

Anyway, off to play the demo again now. :P I blame you.

Just had a great game. Basically there were MASSIVE losses on both sides, and I fought (well, nuked) back from a seemingly lost position.

I'm Africa and the AI is North America....I move my fleet (battleships and carriers) across the Atlantic to the US East Coast, and have my subs sail all the way around South America to (eventually) threaten the West Coast. My silos were all kind centered on Northern Africa, protecting Cairo and the likes.

Now, my silos' placement wasn't really such a great idea. Using a full-scale attack with subs, carriers and his ICBM's the AI pretty much obliterates the entire of Africa. :? Like, really OWN me regardless of my air defense being on full force. I was left at 135 against -65 after that one attack, I kid you not.

So...thanks to my carriers being near the coast I managed to take out 2 of the AI's silos as they were in ICBM mode, leaving him with 4 silos (of which one was already heavily damaged). The AI had -remarkably- chosen to completely ignore most of my infrastructure and I still had 6 (almost) full silos left. So....with a coordinated attack from my subs, the bombers I had left and my silos I manage to take out the remainder of his silos wasting little firepower.

That's when the fun began. 8-) Even though I hadn't nuked any actual cities yet, he wasleft completely defenseless against my ICBM's and relatively defenseless against my bombers and subs. I just huked and nuked and nuked until no city in the US had more than 1m citizens left. :) It was glorious. The comeback was complete: within the time limit I managed to overturn the situation, beating the AI with a good 20 points in the end. I had only 18 million Africans alive left, and he was down to 12 million Americans. So, yeah, Nuclear Apocalypse basically.

Wish i had made a vid, but the pic says enough I suppose. :P

hehe...I love the pwnage. I own the computer pretty much every time now...it's just a matter of getting the hang of how to play it, I guess. :p This was all the gaming I had while on my little trip, so I played it a bunch. Good stuff. I'm really tempted to buy the full version just so I can have full global nuclear war. Have you watched the "rolling demo"? Basically it just sets up 3 AIs that fight each other...totally brutal. Since you're spectating, you can see all their fleets and movement and whatnot. Usually one of the three AI players is just massively annihilated.

Nice pic :o That's what I call winning a nuclear war, heh.

And yeah, I've seen the rolling demo...pretty damn insane once defcon 1 hits and one of the players opens fire. I don't know if the player positions are chosen randomly but in the demo I saw it was Europe, Africa and Asia. Asia gets a MASSIVE win because it's a little out of the way of the other two who pretty much annihilate each other. :)

If I had the funds atm I'd buy it. I can't wait to see what 6-player full ownage looks like, hehe. Two people owe me a lot of cash but my actual funds are about 25€. So yeah, I'm passing. For now. :)

I just bought nightfall and heroes of MM, so I'll probably chill out for a bit. I need to see if Medieval 2 will support my CPU or not...if not, too bad, I won't be buying it. The nuclear pwnage just rocks. I built some stuff at work on our plasma tv showcasing the game. hehe...lots of videos from the game showing pwnage (well, like 4 videos)...a scrolling ticker of nuke stats, videos of nuke tests going on in a corner, and still shots of nukes in the other corner. :) All on like a 42" plasma tv. It looks real good.

Lmao...you're actually winning over people at work for some thermonuclear lunch breaks by demonstrating the game on huge sexy screens? Awesome.

I am amazed you know the quote. Kudos. Except that it's "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds", but your heart is in the right place. :P That's one of the coolest phrases ever

lol @ the video clip. And shit man, of course I know the quote...I'm supposed to be an intellectual. :P I even know that Oppenheimer (probably) mistranslated the original Hindu text...either way, the coolness still stands. ;)

You're right about me misquoting it btw...but I prefer to think I just updated the archaic speak. ;) 'Am become', wtf?

Best...session...ever!

90 million killed....ZERO casualties on my side. :o Apparently, you CAN win in nuclear war. Remind me to apply for missile command control when nuclear war hits.
