This is more like a cheap Steam fanboy plug than review. I just wanna round up my purchases during this rather amazingly cheap games-athon we know as christmas.
Larva Mortus £1.80
Serious Sam HD £9
Zombie Shooter 2 £1.8
Medieval 2 TW £3
Medieval 2 TW: Kingdoms £5
Shadowground Survivor £1.8
Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood £1.40
Torchlight £0
Killing Floor £7.5
Nikopol £3
Bioshock £10
C&C 3 £5
C&C 3: Kanes Wrath £5
Defence Grid £0
First off, all those games amount to £54.30 which for me indicated a goddamn bargain given new full priced titles are usually £35 each. Thank you Steam for such wonderful prices! Yes, of course I could have torrented them for free, but at these prices, Steam is offering alot more since for me torrenting is a PITA:
- Takes effort. Gotta find the right torrent and then baby sit the download. Steam is far more simple.
- Torrent download rates are erratic or stupidly slow. Steam is usually very fast.
- Torrents may have security (virus) issues, Steam doesn't.
- Torrenting has a way of absolutely killing my bandwidth, even for browsing, Steam doesn't.
- Sometimes the shit you just torrenting simply doesn't work, so you have to download it again. Steam software works 99% first time.
- Unpacking, cracking and config mayhem post-torrent. Steam has seamless installation!
- Torrenting is illegal, Steam isn't (minor gripe)
Secondly, a little review on the games so far:
Larva Mortus: ~50MB game. Basically a birds eye view 2D shooter where you kill zombies, vampires and random other crazy shit with crazy weapons. Totally casual game. Nothing amazing.
Serious Sam HD: At £9 it's one of the more expensive ones but i'm sure you're all aware of how much fun I had with it. My only grip is that it's short (even for £9) and for me, the replay value is only there if you play with more friends. Nonetheless, mindblowing.
Zombie Shooter 2: Only played a few mins of this so far. It was cheap and involved killing zombies, so I was sold
Unfortunately, I don't think this is going to be a good one. I will play it some more, but my first impressions are that it could be the worst one of the lot.
Medieval and exp: I only bought this cos I saw O'cram playing it recently and there were a few new mods I wanted to try, primarily a LorR mod. Medieval 2 (+ kingdoms) is the most polished of the newer TW games and offers alot of modding capability. Unfortunately the LorR mod wasn't very good, but there at least another 2 i'm considering trying out.
Shadowground Survivor: A 3D scifi, top-down, alien shooter. The visuals and controls are so far pretty cool. It's another casual game but a decent one. Need to play more of this. It's kind of a damn shame there's no coop.
Foreign Legion: This kinda sucks i think. The visuals are interesting but the controls, difficulty and lack of substance kinda kill it for me.
Torchlight: Cost me nothing cos Ox got it for me. Poured a fair amount of hours into it so far and it's fun. Casual, no nonsense, colourful, action-RPG.
Lastly, just acknowledge that I have ALOT of these games currently installed and committed to, yet still have 5 to install !!! including c&c, bioshock and killing floor which are pretty major titles. Like a little siberian fox or something, It feels like i have a plentiful winter stash of games to see me past the cold
