What can you hear?
As they age, most people stop hearing certain high-pitched frequencies. I'm curious how that applies to most of us here. http://journal.plasticmind.com/ears/mos ... a-youngun/(below the page, whipper-snap-o-meter) I can vaguely hear 16 Khz, but 17 and 18 are wasted on me.

Re: What can you hear?
I have pretty bad hearing (I blame concerts) but I can hear them all, although the 18 was not loud to me by any means.

Re: What can you hear?
Oh the quality of your hearing isn't related to the frequencies you can hear, don't worry. Kinda jealous you can stil hear 18 Khz though!

Re: What can you hear?
Can't hear 18KHz but I love the sound of the lower frequencies! BRAINDAMAGE FTW!!!

Re: What can you hear?
I can't hear it at 15Khz unless I pop my ears first (like you do when you get off an aeroplane)

Re: What can you hear?
Oh wait, I think I can hear 18KHz if I "pop" my ears like Mole.

Re: What can you hear?
Might do this later, but the test won't be that accurate probably because it also depends on your computer setup (obviously).
I do a similar test with my students each year btw (with a frequency generator or what's it called).

Re: What can you hear?
Oh well that could be why I could hear them all, as I was listening through my headset.

Re: What can you hear?
up through 16khz I can hear, though 16 khz is starting to get close to background noise. After that, it's virtually impossible to distinguish the tone from background noise...so...yea, I'm partially deaf. But I know this... working next to an airstrip for a year does that to you.

Re: What can you hear?
Yep I can definitely hear 18KHz now. Maybe it was a case of training my ears?

Re: What can you hear?
Not sure whether it's due to ear conditions or speakers but I've tried this twice with differing results now.
First Mole got me to try it on his; I could easily hear up to 15Hz and could *just* hear 16Hz on his computer.
I just tried on my own pc and also popped my ears. I could easily hear up to 17Hz and *just* hear 18Hz.
Maybe it's due to the fact that where I work, we're right at the entrance of a shopping centre which makes use of a box that constantly pumps out a high frequency noise in order to discourage kids from hanging around near the doors. I can easily hear that all day long though I tend to subconciously block it out so maybe my ears are a little trained for it anyway.

Re: What can you hear?
That's a good point actually. Maybe it depends on your location since the sound coming from your PC gets mixed up with other sounds. Or maybe the application is a hoax and it's designed to take the piss out of us.

Re: What can you hear?
Don't worry people, the loss of hearing is a natural part of ones life and gods way of saying thank you for listening all those stupid people along the way . Consider it a gift for a long lasting torture. Unfortunately stupid people do not speak at 18khz frequency so you are better off popping your ears permanently right about now /sarcasm off.
