I am once again humbly at the request of temporary use of your superbrains.
My cpu in my current PC is dying. Has been for a while, it's now getting dangerously hot - I've done the thermal paste, checked the cooler for hot cold flow, reformatted my PC to make sure no rogue programs were running etc - no good. I've had this thing for 10+ years so it's done really, really well. I've bought a replacement CPU to hold me over in the mean time.
However, I think it's time to bite the bullet and get my self together and build a new rig.
I've spent an hour or two researching and come up with two build (basically depending on how much money I can get together, ask for early birthday and Christmas presents, sell a liver etc.) and I was hoping to get a few of you to cast your eyes over the builds to see if I've fucked up, fallen for any false economy, can save a wad of cash by downgrading slightly, or get a big performance boost by upgrading for not much more cash etc.
I honestly can't thank you enough for any help - it's been a long, LONG time since I've even dabbled in PC building, so most of my knowledge is basically pre-historic.
The following builds are geared towards (hopefully) gaming with a side of video editing. I current render on a 10+ year machine, so the processing time for rendering doesn't matter to me.
Please can you take a look over the following two potential builds and
- Recommend where I can get more bang for not much more money
- Recommend where I can save a chunk of cash and not loose too much performance
- Recommend Cases that have at least 4 front facing USB (If not more, ideally at least 2 3.0 slots) and have front audio connections
- Check the PSU has enough Power (And is good enough quality, I went for at least gold on both)
- Help me figure out if there are any clearance issues - might need to decide on a case for this
- Spot any other flaws/obvious goofs

I don't care about RGB or not
GPU brand - I prefer nvidia first party but sometimes the cost isn't worth it, you can't get them OR the cost isn't on PC part picker, so I've chosen the closest thing
CPU note - I know the Ryzen 7 tends to be favoured for gaming, but will the extra cores in the Ryzen 9 future proof it?

I wasn't 100% sure if this topic should go here or general, as it's a bit of both.
I came here with a tale that only feels like it belongs on this particular forum, and I'd like to share it with you all. This contains some soppy shit, fair warning and some spoilers if you're somehow even slower than me at BG2.
So, some of you may remember that I met Pevil through this websites spiritual predecessor, when it was ran by Tribe and contained a (For the time) god tier Baldur's Gate trove of information. I remember playing BG2 and looking up some information, finding Tribe's forum and not too long thereafter, Pevil made a post to say that she won't be posting for a while and some contact details. Not long after that we got together and without boring everyone to death, we had some great times and (my fault) some shit times. I've grown and changed a lot since then, but in recent years Pevil has deactivated her socials and hasn't been in touch - however, I believe she still uses this website which is just one reason I'm posting here.
The second, is that I wanted to share my Baldur's Gate 2 story with everyone here and just a little bit about why it's so special to me that the events of today just happened.
I don't think anyone here knows that a couple of years ago, my younger brother passed away - Covid and subsequent complications - but that's not what I came here to say. What the take-away is, is that Baldur's Gate 2 had a huge place in the childhood Scott and I shared. We played it for hours and hours - even though we weren't amazing at it. When I say childhood, I would have been about 15/16 and Scott would have been 12/13 (Depending on how soon we got it after release.) Scott grew up to be a NWN fan and I never really got in to it, but it shows the influence it had.
Today, after approximately 24 years, I finally completed Baldur's Gate 2 and it's DLC, Throne of Bhaal. I was playing on Core rules (so just a smidge up from medium on the slider) and man, some of the fights in that game were some of the hardest fights of any game, period - and I'm a huge Dark Souls nerd. Sure, there were probably better ways to level up (I did not follow a char building guide) and whilst I did reload on death, that was more just to keep a clean sheet instead of reviving people. I only used items I could find/craft in my natural progression, as in, I didn't look up a "best kit" guide and grab all the best gear along the way - hell, 2 of my toons didn't even have a full armour set by the end of ToB.
I had a custom character as lead - Jupiter Horogan - and then for as much as possible, outside of forced party members due to story events, the usual Jaheira, Minsc (and boo!), Imoen, Aerie (Love interest) and Nalia. Character was Chaotic good, though I did often tend to follow the more lawful dialogue and I used the Fighter Mage Theif multi-class, which was both a blessing and a curse.
The fights I struggled on the most were
- The Final Seal area in watchers keep
- The Ravager final challenge
- The Lich at the end of the sidequest in the docks (Kang? Kangax? Something like that)
The Ravager took me over 24 real life hours. Trying to basically get lucky on rolls whilst being assaulted by his adds.
Honorable Mentions
- The final battle, but at least you had a few points where you could stop and catch your breath
- Any fight where you were thrust in to the battle without the opportunity to cast your buffs and summons
- Weirdly, in the sewers, there's a bunch of people digging and whilst they weren't that hard, the random spawning mobs made it a challenge.
So, today, I come back to as close as possible to where it all began to mark my achievement and say to both my brother and Pevil - I wish you were here to have celebrated this monumental experience with me. It seems so crazy to think about how much time has vanished. I don't have my original release discs any more, but I still have both of the Cardboard box complete releases. I also still have a floppy disk somewhere, with a save file that Pevil and I started when we were living in Scarborough!

Cautiously optimistic. In my old age I'm more and more like Ox... I doubt I'll buy this new or at full price. But you never know... if the reviews are glowing I might. It's not like I don't have the money (unlike Ox of old), I just don't really play games like I used to.

Yeah, I know you don't really need to fix an SSD in place but it feels ridiculous to deliver it with premade holes for screws and then not deliver the screws with it. On top of all that, it turns out I don't have any SATA cables in the house.
I was convinced I had at least 5 of them somewhere, but apparently not. It's one of those things that you always find several of until you need them, then they're gone. I'll get one from a friend of course but jesus what is it with manufacturers delivering just the product and none of the accessories these days. Like how most smart phones aren't delivered with a charger anymore. If it was something that wasn't essential to using the damn thing, then fine. But wtf am I gonna do with an SSD without a cable, or a phone without a charger?

As a result of this, as well as other reasons, I'm thinking of migrating elsewhere, as well as updating everything to the latest. That comes with a few caveats:
- Upgrading is probably going to kill all the file attachments we've got. So images and other stuff will just stop working. New posts you will (probably) be able to attach stuff again, but I'll have to experiment.
- To make this easier on me, I'll probably migrate this to a different domain. Instead of forums.clankiller.com it'll be forums.plasmasky.com. I can set up automatic redirects and stuff so if you go to the old domain it'll just forward you to the new one. Eventually I could migrate it back to forums.clankiller.com, but it would take some time.
- When I start doing the migration and upgrade, I'll have to start with a specific point-in-time backup of the database. Anything posted after that backup will be lost. I can take down the forums once I get to the point of starting that process, so we're guaranteed not to lose anything.
This brings a lot of benefits, not the least of which is way better performance and absolute and full control of everything. The upgrade is inevitable even if I decide not to migrate hosts, which means losing the file attachments may be unavoidable. I plan on playing around with this a bit to see what I can do.
With that said, anyone have any opinions or input?
