Anyway, please keep in mind how large the US is... 300 million people. School shootings aren't exactly a common occurrence. But yes, schools are certainly not safe places. Police officers at schools is not uncommon... they'll usually keep a cop or two on site just in case.
What sucks is any state-funded school (and any state high school or whatever) is technically federal property and you can't bring a gun on campus even with a concealed carry permit.
