Damn, I gotta go see Bladerunner now. I'm a huge fan of the orginal (and the source material, heh), so dunno why I haven't done so yet. Proly because I work Mon-Fri now and I hate going to the cinema with the common folk. I need an adult cinema like the one Satis goes to. :P

I saw The Lobster on your recommendation Satis, and you're right it's a wonderful film. Acting, pacing, visually, metaphorically, so clever and weird and interesting. As a single in a couples' world a lot of the themes resonate with me haha. I love that the movie takes a shit on both couples and single people and the interplay.

Also saw La La Land on a date and it was actually....really good. Some of the song and dance pieces I could take or leave and I don't like Emma Stone, but the musical and visual direction are out of this world. It's also a bittersweet movie with an adult theme about making choices, none of that sugary sweet happily ever after shit.

I actually enjoyed Stretch. Nothing groundbreaking but fun to watch http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2494280/?ref_=nv_sr_1

lol, that's awesome you watched (and liked) the lobster. What a bizarre movie that way. :p

Logan -have you seen this yet? Hell, my memory is terrible. It may even be in this thread. Mostly great movie with a few unfortunate letdowns.

Atomic Blonde - pretty decent cold war spy movie. Some of the fight scenes are freaking brutal. Worth a watch.

Not much else to recommend at this time. Star Wars comes out in 8 days. :D

Watched 'The Last Knights' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2493486/?ref_=nv_sr_2.

Although the '47 Ronin' sub-theme is ever present in the movie, it is actually quite good. A bit predictable but definitely above average.

Mm Last Knights and Atomic Blonde sound pretty good - must investigate. :-)

Yeah, I saw Logan and felt the same way about it Satis. It did everything right and yet it somehow left me wanting a bit towards the end. Maybe they should have taken more time to work out what happened between the "regular" X-Men and Wolverine movies and this one. I mean I know that there was so massive 'powering down' of mutants in the Marvel Universe and that it is related to that, but I'm not enough of a comics geek to know the details. And those would have been interesting for people like me and other even more confused moviegoers I think.

Saw Oblivion, with Tom Cruise, a while ago and it was a typical Tom Cruise blockbuster: impeccable production values, good story, well acted...and pretty forgettable haha.

Saw the new Star Wars, the last jedia on Thursday (day it came out, of course) and I liked it a great deal. Not surprising, since I'm a Star Wars geek. It had its issues, but so do all the Star Wars movies. Parts of it were really amazing... other parts were kinda meh. Still, overall it was great imo.

Watched The Bad Batch recently. What a weird freaking movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4334266/ It's not particularly good, but it's so bizarre it may be worth a viewing. Keanu Reeves is in it... I'd say he's the bad guy, but there's really no bad guy in this. Or everyone's a bad guy. I don't know.

Been watching Mr. Robot still. Still a good show, imo. I had to pause it on a shot of a Linux commandline to see what was going on (from a geek perspective) and it was kinda cute and actually believable.

Not watching much else at the moment. Have a few movies queued up. Once I watch them, I'll have more to say.

Also saw the new Star Wars movie but unlike Satis I didn't like it very much. :-) I just wrote an email to a friend detailing my problems with it so I'll copy paste it here. Keep in mind that it's full of spoilers in case you haven't seen the movie yet.

Also watched Doctor Strange (one of the more recent Marvel movies). I really liked it...I mean it wasn't amazing or anything, but the plot was interesting enough, the characters engaging and the visual effects were top notch. A very competent blockbuster. :P

Quote:
In short: it wasn't bad, but it felt a bit off and bloated. The main culprits for me where the (too) many attempts at humor - a lot of them falling flat- and a completely pointless side story (Finn and Rose at the casino and the First Order flagship). Even the final part of the movie (at the salt mine) felt like it had been tacked on just because. It would have made for a much more organic ending if they'd stopped after the Rey-Kylo-Snoke scene and fight. I also hated the Rose character...what was her point? She doesn't get anything done, she is gushing all over Finn and in the end even stops him from saving them all by almost getting him and her killed in the process. Wtf?! And why even have a great actor like Del Toro in your movie if he is basically a pointless and flat opportunist/villain? I should hope he returns in the next movie and has a point...oh and Snoke is just...dead? No further explanation as to his goals or origin? Isn't he supposed to be an almost all-powerful Sith lord (or at least Force user)? He can manipulate Rey and Kylo's dreams but he can't see a lighsabre coming? I guess we could chalk that up to arrogance but even then, not knowing who or what he is or where he came from or wants really takes away from the power of that moment. Cool fight though.

So what did I like? I liked most of the Kylo Ren scenes, somewhat surprisingly. While he was a bit of an annoying and angsty brat in The Force Awakens, he felt a lot more convincing in this movie, especially in his scenes with Rey. I mean, I guess he still is a confused angsty brat here, but at least his character is interesting - which is more than what I can say for most of the other characters in this movie. I also liked the island scenes, and I really wished they'd explored the whole "both the jedi and the sith are wrong" angle a bit more. It feels a bit like they're setting that up for the next movie with Luke, Kylo and even Snoke going on about it, but how will that even work? Disney is never going to go for a scenario that a) doesn't have the "good" guys winning and b) basically ends the franchise as we know it (by doing away with the Sith and the Jedi altogether). Even the fact that Del Toro's character who is very clear that he doesn't believe in "good" or "bad" per se turns out to be a cold betrayer kind of suggests that this isn't exactly what Disney has in mind for the extended Star Wars universe.

On a sidenote, knowing now that Carrie Fisher died made the Luke and Leia character stories a bit unfortunate...with Luke dying and Mark Hamill living, and Leia and Fisher doing the exact opposite. Will they digitalise her in the next film? Or just have her die off screen? I don't know how late in editing Fisher died but I kinda felt like having her die in the attack on her ship would have been a more fitting ending, especially considering Fisher's death. The Force pull back to the ship looked really corny anyway...

So, in short: they should have trimmed the fat on the Finn and Rose sidequest, ended the movie at the big fight in Snoke's throne room and then given Luke a less "OH SNAP" ending. liked his ascension into the Force scene well enough but it felt weird and a bit anticlimactic after that overly long ending.

The Star Wars film is very divisive... some people love, some people hate... and to me, that means it was really good. It's not the same thing.. they did something different. I'd rather they do that (and fail) than rehash the originals ad nauseum. Still, many of your criticisms have a minor basis in reality  . The movie could have been better. I love how both Kylo Ren and Rey have grown into their characters... Kylo Ren is a bad guy I can empathize with (rather than sneer at like in the first movie). His turn to the dark side and Luke's moment of weakness were great. The fact Rey is a nobody is awesome. The fact every time the rebels tried to execute a plan it failed completely is totally awesome. Poe hopefully matured (that was more ham-fisted), and Finn may finally be becoming a hero. I think the Rose thing was (another hamfisted) attempt at growing Finn into a leader rather than some guy killing himself for no real purpose.

Post Re: Good films..
Movies I've watched lately:

Blade of the Immortal: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5084170/) A movie about a samurai that was made immortal and is convinced by a young girl to help her get revenge for her father's death. I saw this with english subtitles and it's actually pretty good, assuming you like that kind of movie. If you like samurai movies, watch it.

Your Name: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5311514/) Anime movie about a guy and girl that randomly swap bodies. To say any more would ruin the plot, so I'll leave it at that. It's a bit of a chick flick I think, but it's still a good movie. If anime doesn't turn you off, i'd say watch it.

Sleight: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4573516/) A kid from LA gets caught up in some crap and uses his skills with magic and sleight of hand to try to get out of it, or something. This movie was not particularly good. Avoid.

Atomic Blonde: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2406566/) Charlize Theron is a spy in cold-war Berlin. I liked this movie. It gets into some pretty brutal violence at times and otherwise is an amusing cold war spy flick. I'd recommend it.

I suppose you're right that it's good they did something different. Maybe that's why I didn't like it so much? I can't say. I think my criticisms for the most part stilly apply regardless from the change in tone though - the ones concerning the side story, general plot, attempted humor and overall movie length that is. I found this interesting article about The Last Jedi which seems to echo some of your thoughts:

http://fandom.wikia.com/articles/last-j ... wikia-rail

I didn't look at it from this angle and it makes sense. This is the movie where everything is really passed on from the old to the new. Han is dead, Snoke is dead, Luke is dead, soon Leia will be dead, hell even Kylo's adoration for Darth Vader and Rey's hope for some divine destiny seem dead. I know a lot of people struggled with things like Luke's behavior on the island, or even his kind of attempted murder on Kylo. I think these people are the ones who have the hardest time accepting that the series is trying to kill the old and usher in the new. I think for me the problem was more with the film itself than the direction it took (as I said I loved the Kylo and Rey arc, which is basically the backbone of the new direction the film is taking). I guess it doesn't ultimately matter who Snoke is or where he came from if you are just trying to make a statement. But making a statement doesn't always mean it's a good plot device. :)

The Last Jedi continues to divide, but apparently mostly between the critics and the regular joes:

http://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wa ... -last-jedi
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_w ... _last_jedi

For the critics, it's one of the best Star Wars movies to date. For the regular audiences it seems to be one of the worst to date.

Peculiar, to say the least.

Yea, to each their own. I liked it, but I'm a Star Wars nut. I can't be relied upon for solid opinions. Still.... I liked it. I'm still hoping for another Rogue One type movie. :D

Unless its somekind of a hoax, then there's the Solo: A Star Wars Story in the making.

Oh yes, it'll be out soon. I'm looking forward to it. Lando seems like he's going to be very interesting.

Oh hell yeah, I think Donald Glover as Lando is amazeballs. Let's hope it won't be a disappointment. :-) I might be more excited about seeing Glover as Lando than to see whoever is playing Han play Han.

Saw a few movies recently but been so fucking busy that it's mostly been mindless popcorn stuff. But I'm not judging myself too harshly, don't worry. :P

Wonder woman: actually a surprisingly good movie. Gal Gadot is perfectly cast as the wooden, naive, exotic superheroine. I fear all those qualities might work against her in the coming movies featuring wonder woman, but we'll see. Definitely a 7/10 for me. The first DC movie that was actually worth watching, imo.

Thor Ragnarok: a really good movie that hits all the right marks, but my only criticism of it is that it didn't really feel much like a Thor movie. It was a bit too zany and out there, while I always saw Thor as a bit humorless and dour. Might have worked better as a Guardians of the Galaxy instalment really. Still, as a movie it's an 7.5/10

Valerian and the city of a thousand planets: This one is a mixed bag...it's got amazing worldbuilding and creativity, but the story and acting falls kind of flat. If you like SF and really outlandish ideas then this one is definitely one to watch, if not, skip.
