Are you joking?
The troubled teenager had no point. His fights at school...what did they mean? They had no influence on the story.
The little girls character was even more pointless. What was her contribution other than showing that Mr Stalls character had another child?
The wife/husband relationship was warped. Even when she found out he was a nutbar, she seemed totally fine with it. Like thats believable.
A hitman-turned-family man in hiding wipes out a crime gang once his cover is blown. Thats all that happens. No plot.
The rampant sex sessions were the only things keeping me entertained, that, along with occasional fantasies over the wife. Who, may i say, is far too attractive for a mother of two.

I agree with you that the storyline as such isn't very involving Derf, but the movie is a social commentary rather than entertainment An Sich.
It's about the thin line between murderer and hero, and how values and perception change depending of the context (war time? Peace?) The movie is questioning the true nature of man, highlighting the tension between nature and civilization. Etc.
It's typical Cronenberg. Not my favorite movie of all time by a long shot, but it was interesting.

Such abstraction in all things, including art, just annoys me.

Hehe, I'm not usually very perceptive to subtle hints either, you know. Being "ox the dumb strength" and all. But I thought the meaning of most of the movie was pretty clear...especially in view of the current state of affairs in the world.

I thought hidden meaning is what launches a work of fiction from the mundane to the sublime?
a la Philip K Dick, George Orwell, and countless others we know and love.

Yup...as long as it's not that obscure that you need to plow through half the world's literary history to understand wtf is going on. (cfr. Joyce)

I wouldn't consider Orwell's meaning "hidden". He isn't very subtile in his message.
And lol at Joyce. I still have to finish reading Ulysses, along with a manual.

If you thought Ulysses is bad, then how about some Finnegan's wake?

Yeah, I'll say it before you do: WWWWWTTTTTFFFFF
I had to analyze 5 pages of that crock with a group of ppl once in uni. I think we got about 1/5th of the references and 0/0th of the meaning. Something tells me it might have been better to get stoned on opium before attempting to get to that shit. I think it'll suddenly make a lot more sense.

We could write shit like that. With stuff like the internet and the Gutenberg library thing, I could write a novel using only quotes from early nineteenth century norwegian poets.
