EMECO - Bringing the Galaxy Closer to Home
Muah ha! Ive had another of my many great visions...
Ok. Imagine like in 200 years time where our resources on Earth start to get thin (assumption). Also, at this time our understanding of Space (as in planets and shit) improves. So then, we start to look into space for answers (Materials, Minerals...).
Emeco (Extraterrestrial Material Extraction Company) aims to do just that. With its advanced space travel technology, it can construct and launch gigantic galactic freighters that land on a Planet or Moon (with resources) and extract them, return home and sell to the highest bidder.
Of course, It may only be profitable to extract the most valuable minerals that we find here on Earth VERY rare...
In any case, this is assuming that there ARE valuable resources elsewhere and that we WILL be in need of them. But in any case, it sounds like a nice idea.

You're not the first one with this idea. What about making space flight itself more profitable?

What resources are you talking about exactly? Minerals and such .. i don't know if they're that crucial, unless you're playing some RTS-game.
If you're talking oil, coal .. those reserves will probably be exhausted within 50 years.
Btw if we have the technology to get our materials on other planets, we can assume we have the technology to just build outer space colonies, so why bring it here if you can just move over there, saves you the trip backwards

I didnt think shit would ever become profitable... If so Ill be one rich son of a gun!
Wow image the limitless possibilities of shit in 200 years..... (ponders)

Arathorn: Thats just boring.
J: I talking minerals, like super-plutonium and stuff. I dont know! Just really valuable stuff. And yes, my idea revolves around colonisation, but comeon, i dont think wed be self suffieicent living on the planets we know.
11B: LOL

That's not boring, that's the thing you have to do before you can make profit from mining in space, cuz as matters lie now, no amount of scareceness can make people look for minerals in space.

The moon has vast amounts of titanium in its 'dust'. To make it profitable, though, you'd have to move out there and do all the refining on the moon itself. Then just toss the finished product into a low earth orbit and have robotic tugs pick em up. Gigantic spacecraft would probably not be worth the effort....
....unless.....
you send them to the asteroid belt, pick out a nice, big, ripe chunk of rock with lots of minerals and metals and whatnot, then tow that bastard back to earth. Insert it into a nice orbit and then mining and whatnot is easy.

I doubt we are capable of disturbing anything. Any even if we do, who cares?
