is what pulling up an IP address? The XP box? The Router? 98? What?

if you type in the "location" of the router XP tries to dial an existing connection (we have tried removing it)

all it says is "This webpage can not be viewed ofline" click connect

and if you click that (with existing connection installed) it says "no dial tone"

and if you click that (without) it says "no internet conection available"

ah-hah!

blah. Does the XP box have an IP address?

If you go into network connections, is your network card listed there? If so, double-click on it, then go to support. The IP address is there.

At least part of the problem is that you have IE set to still dialup to the internet. To fix that...

open internet explorer
cancel all the dial crap until you can get to the tools menu
go to internet options
go to connections
put the dot next to 'never dial a connection'
click 'lan settings'
uncheck everything
ok out of the boxes and try to pull up a website again

From your description, I think that's only part of your problem, but it's something to try.

I'll try that later on Satis, cheers, but if that doesn't work, well we have some guy coming round tomorrow from a comp shop who hopefully will be able to sort it.

and when you click on IE --> Tools --> IE Options --> Connections , there is nothing in the dial up box? Also click on "Lan Settings" Nothing should be checked.

well the guy took the router away to see if his xp machine would recognise it. so he's ringing later on, see if it's my comp or dodgy software.

yeah, and now he's contacting the company. except they don't exist.

best as I can figure he's contacting the people who sell the router now. I'll keep you informed. He better not be ripping me off.

Lol :D

I went through that shit some time ago, when i had 1xp and 1w98. In the end, we were forced to return two 2routers and change 2 cables, lovly.

BTW! i suggest you take all ips from the working comp and insert it manually into XP. Also if it still doesnt work, try changing the ports on router. every 5th router is a malfunctioning one. A friend works in a company that sets up all kinds of servers and shit, he said he usually takes 7 routers with him when he goes to install em, talk about quality eh :D
