li'l off topic but I got one of them trojans on my comp the other day, bro claimed not to have installed anything and he goes to me "your comp is nackered, keeps coming up with this stupid warning"

so I say
"well, you are the only one who has used it, i've not been here, so if there is something on there, it is your fault"
mom butts in "no its not his fault"
"yes it is, he's obviously installed something"
scott "no i havent"

so i got to comp, find trojan, remove it, go downstairs to my mom

"scotts installed something on my computer, i found the virus"

mom "well he told me he couldn't install it on the main one"

so i thinks to myself, she's in on it... and go on at her about lying is a nasty thing, you know, like she would to me. Scott gets home, i've calmed down, I asked him "what did you install on this comp" he sheepishly goes "fall out 2"
"was it coppied?"
*illegal answer here*

"don't ever install anything on my computer again"

so what I wanna know, is is there a way to set a password that completely denies acces to windows 98? like, not the one that you can press cancel to bypass, just completely won't boot till it's entered?

cheers, moan over.

yeah ... um cool site

Mole, there is a system in XP to prevent the casual user from doing that. Set up a user that has no admin properties (control panel > users). Password protect your profile which does have admin powers, and in theory any user would need to have your password to install stuff. You can even just set up a guest profile instead of one special for him. Switching users is as easy as windowskey+L.

If you don't have XP, then... eh.. I dunno.

yak yak yak. Christ. Anyway, just password protect your BIOS. That'll stop him. Just don't forget the password or you'll have to crack the case. :/

yea, sometimes it's F12, sometimes F2, sometimes delete, sometimes F1, sometimes ctrl-c (I think I've seen that one). Depends on the BIOS.

Just hold down a key on your keyboard when you start the computer. With any luck it'll come up with a
"stuck key" error and tell you what to hit to get into the BIOS.

I love those messages. "Keyboard not detected. Press any key to continue." *cough*

there should be 2 bios passwords. One is a boot password, the other is a password to keep people out of the BIOS (usually called supervisor password or something).
