Post Portable MP3 Players
Im looking to buy a new MP3 player.

What i see from Philips and Samsung product range is that they only have like MAX 64MB memory for the MP3. This means like only half and album! :x

Obviously i wanted something that holds more than half and album, so i went to Sony.co.uk and found they have the following MP3 Player. Check it out:

Features:

3. 256MB flash memory inside + Memory Stick Duo slot to expand the total memory size 32MB to 128MB

4. More than 10 CDs music into embedded flash memory.

NOW IM CONFUSED!

It sais 256MB memory, that means like 2 albums of MP3's, thus 2 CD's. NOT 10!

Whats going on? Do MP3 files get further compressed inside portable MP3 players?

i think you might find that when you stick it in to your computer, you will find that you get an option to sacrifice quality for quantity.

I've looked through plenty of MP3 players, and you see it all over the place.

like things saying 64mb can hold 2 cd's
128 can hold 6

just stupid.

other than that i dont have the faintest.

yea, it depends on the sample rate of the mp3. 128kbps seems to be the average...192kbps is IMO the best quality/size ratio. You can go way higher than that. At any rate..ermmm...

a 5.5 minute, 56kbps, mono MP3 is about 2MB (roughly
.4 MB/minute).

a 5 minute, 128kbps, stereo MP3 is roughly 5MB (roughly 1 MB/minute).

a 4 minute, 192kbps, stereo MP3 is roughly 6MB
(roughly 1.5 MB/minute).

So...a 256MB card would hold 256 minutes of MP3s at 128kbps stereo. Roughly. Or 170 minutes of 192kbps. ORRR....640 minutes of 56kbps mono. These are rough estimates...in reality it would probably be less, since you need to fit indexes and such in the same space.
