How does openGL compare with DirectX in a Win32 world nowadays? I know it's the only option for *nix environments, but my understanding was that OpenGL was hopelessly antiquated in comparison to DX9. Having not messed with programming in either, I'm kind of blind on the subject. Once I complete my (work related) c# web development work, I'm planning on doing some playing with c# and directx under Windows.

OpenGL and DX9's D3D are two quite different APIs but basically are still able to do the same things.

Technically, almost everything that is doable with D3D, is doable with OpenGL too. And vice versa.

Practically, everything is and will be possible with both APIs as long as there is interest in developing them parallely.

Personally, I still like more the way OpenGL approaches to 3D because it is closer to natural understanding of geometry (the part of it which is basis of 3D programming) and therewith excellent for beginners.

I am still waiting to see what an interface will DX10 have to offer.

Here is a nice link with other nice links on the bottom.
