heh...this isn't TES: Arena.

I swear, took my 15 characters to make it out of the sewers with that one.

haha...yeah, it took me days to get out of the Daggerfall starting dungeon (named Privateer's Hold btw)... :?

But the contrast when I made it out was...amazing. I had a world to explore! Cities! Castles! Dungeons! It was awesome³.

You need to send Bethesda $11, and then you can finish installing. It's a secret extra fee they're tackign on for foreigners.

Actually, I have no idea.

I googled it...here's virtually the same error for Deus Ex. Maybe you can adapt it to Oblivion:

http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=44958

frmo another forum for a similar error"

Moving to technical and deleting duplicate thread there.

*edit* and a reply to the problem...

I think we've had similar problems posted before, but I can't find any when searching the forums... A quick search on google gave me this solution to the problem:
Go to start>run then typin in msconfig then check teh box saying diagnostic startup then apply it.

Now restart your computer and install it, once installed go back into msconfig and check the normal startup again, restart and the game should work!

Try that and let us know if it works.

if none of that works, try the oblivion forum.

managed to get rid of it by deleting the oblivion temp folder and the actual program itself from the start>all programs list.

trouble is, i have discoverd why..installation fails at data cab2, the pc then thinks that it is installed for some reason, which is why that box comes up.

so data cab2 has a problem. surely this means that the disk or the information on it is fucked? :?

got it from amazon..no idea where the reciept is, looks like i might have to go buy it again

either the dvd is bad/damaged or your drive is acting stupid. Honestly, I tend to be more inquisitive as to the quality of your dvd-rom than your dvd disc. Any scratches on the bastard? You could try ripping an image of the disc to your hard drive, mounting it using like alcohol 120% to a virtual drive, and trying it again.

Overall, sounds like a pain in the ass. Sorry dude, I hate it when crap like that happens.

Installed this last night, I did jack before but I'm gonna give it the big try this time around :D I have to many games I haven't finished  I get bored very easily :(

Still, after reading everyones threads, trying not to read spoilers I'll dive in tonight, might go with a simple Nord warrior for the first go through, gonna be weird getting used to the mechanics after so much NWN, etc, and I never played Morrowind but what the hell..

Btw, I remember combat being block, attk, rinse, repeat...or am I missing something?

Any advice very welcome!

depends on the combat you're going for

sword/shield
block...hit...block....hit

bow
shoot...shoot.....run run run....shoot

spells
zap, zap, zap, out of mana...run away

And of course you can combine the three

zap zap....block....hit...zap...block. :)

I run, jump and shot at the same time. No rules, depends on the terrain. Ideal is to get somewhere where they can't follow you. But here I have ridiculous problems with the keyboard I got to discuss in the General Technical forum when I find some time. Basically pressing a key may block several others which makes my tactics impossible, unless (as I do from time to time just for the hell of it) I form very uncomfortable key maps. :(

Only sword (Claymore). I hit and run, hit and jump, hit and ... . Often happens that the opponent don't even touch me.

Btw, I should have rung the sarcasm bell or something

If anything is going to disappoint me about this game it will be the combat, its a shame they didn't come up with something a little better.

I don't think the combat is bad. Oblivion was aiming for a much more visceral RPG feel..hence the first person view. And the combat fits that... swinging of swords, clanging of shields. I'm not sure what I would do differently about the combat if I could change it.
