First reviews are rolling in and they're looking good. :) The basic gist seems to be that the engine is showing its age and that some technical stuff could/should still be patched, and that the companion system is still pretty meh (although improved), but that on the other hand the dialogue is fantastic, the RPG elements deeper, the world more interesting, the hardcore mode a great addition and that it's still BIG. Other new stuff like better crafting, betting tables with different games at the casinos, skill-based dialogue checks etc also are mentioned.

I'm buying it now. :)

The Bear Grylls approach proves essential in Hardcore Mode, perhaps the most striking and beneficial addition to the game. Activated at the start, it plays up the survival aspect by introducing numerous realistic variables to your game. You need to eat, drink and sleep: hunger, thirst and sleep deprivation will hinder, disorient and eventually kill you if you don't keep on top of them. Ammo has weight in Hardcore Mode, so you can't merrily stuff your pockets with every shell and bullet you find. Efficient inventory planning soon becomes a pressing requirement.

Most importantly, healing items no longer instantly top up your health, but fix you over time, forcing you to be much more tactical in your confrontations. Crippled limbs must be fixed using the rare Doctor's Bag item or patched up by an actual doctor. You can't simply dash in and spam the hotkey for stimpacks during a fight, but have to really think about how you can take down, say, a cellar full of hulking Nightkin without being squished into a fine paste.

It's a brilliant decision, and one that fits perfectly with the aesthetic of the game, forcing you to fully engage with its radiation-scorched landscape. Before, food and water were simply optional health pick-me-ups. Now they form a balancing act, as you weigh up the benefits of curing dehydration sickness with the radiation poisoning you'll get from slurping out of a manky old sink. It's also great to see an extra layer of difficulty that doesn't rely on simply making your enemies bulletproof (yes, Mass Effect, that means you) but instead forces you to play smarter, rather than harder.

Indeed, Fallout remains a procrastinator's dream. My idealistic intention was to plough through the main quests and then explore the margins until my deadline loomed. 50 game-clock hours and 38 quests later, I'd barely scratched the surface of the story, having spent my time being wonderfully distracted by interesting structures and enjoyable side-quests and ooh, what's that over there, let's go and see. I'd visited just under half the locations on the map, was two-thirds of my way towards the Level 30 cap and, according to the Achievements list, there were still at least 16 major quests to be completed. So, yeah: big.

Dude, RPS slammed it:

Precisely what I expected. All they had to develop was a mod, and they failed at that.

Well they didn't slam it, they said they're having fun but that there were technical issues (like I said above). As long as my PC doesn't lock up or crashes every minute I can live with that if the game is fun.

Anyway, we'll see I suppose. I bought it already. :)

ars technica did a review... mostly positive, except the bugs, which are apparently really annoying.

Some redemption from RPS:

My own experience of New Vegas has become a lot more stable after my outburst yesterday. Seems I had a run of bad luck, compounded by the game not telling me about several different and VERY IMPORTANT controls. Hopefully I’ll have my review up by tomorrow afternoon.

Stick with this one to the end. It has quite the finale.

Also, FREAKY AS SHIT character animation bug. :o

Already two patches released for the PC version. Still, they're communicating very openly about it, which is refreshing. Not that I'd expect Obsidian to do anything else than care a lot about New Vegas given how many former Black Isle peeps they have aboard (almost all of them, actually).

RPS has also published a review slagging off the game, which was met with an almost record-breaking response of people who couldn't believe their ears as they enjoyed the game a lot. It was a bizarre turnaround from the usual situation: reviewer praises game, comments thread hates on game + reviewer.

Anyway, given that the vast majority of reviews is very postive and most (even critical) people I've heard like it, I'm not too worried except for the bugs.

I want to remark that Derf actually bought the game just now. :P Apparently.

I'm preparing myself for a crushing review.

Haha, yeah. I was intrigued by all the positive comments. The overall sentiment is that it's better than FO3, which is good cos I heavily disliked FO3.

But anyway, I kinda need a single player game right now. Civ IV is crashing on me, which outlines the general problem with releasing games in basic form, or generally incomplete. I don't think it's healthy for developers to release games prematurely, hoping that modders will add real meat to the title and therefore USE them to drive sales. It's unhealthy because large mods are typically unstable, unpolished and unsupported.

Please note that Derf is buying Fallout: New Vegas, a buggy game, in order to get away from Civ V because of the bugs. The logic is... compelling.

So Ox, have you started playing yet or what? I was kinda holding out to see what you thought, but you've been holding out like an Israeli whore during Yom Kippur.

I've read that basically it feels as a DLC for F3 ... so i'm looking forward to Derf's review :)
