Reinstalling the game now because the game was hellbent on forcing me to play in 800x600 resolution even when all the inis and whatnot told it to go 1400x1050. It did use that resolution for the first time but now it just defaults back to 800x600 and when it takes two lines to display quicksaving.. then that fucking pisses me off.

Obisidian please do us all a favour and stop developing games. Just write the story, the characters and then kindly fuck off. Thanks.

Heh, damn man. Let's "hope" you weren't too far along in the game yet anyway!

I was gonna suggest installing a crapload of mods to make the great game even more awesome, but I think I'll just let you wrestle through the 800X600 troubles for now. ;)

I think I got that one solved. Also i got the Darnified UI overhaul which makes the text and stuff look better. No more 3 pages of dialogue options (what the hell was obsidian thinking anyway?) I was thinking of getting some more mods but then the troubles began and now that i have a general idea how to fix it should the problem reoccur i see no reason not to mod the gameplay further.

Yeah Darnified is a world of difference. I just realized it's been ages since I actually checked up on the mod scene of NV so I may not actually be as much of a help as I imagined haha...some tips though

So, a few weeks ago I started a new game of Fallout: New Vegas (+ all DLC). I modded it pretty heavily and it took a while before I got everything installed (and non-conflicting) but good God it's an amazing game now. :P Core part of my mods is the so-called Project Nevada, which is an overhaul in the best sense of the word. Basically, it adds an entire menu option in the game that allows you to tweak almost every important aspect of the gameplay. It already rebalances 'vanilla' NV settings to more acceptable stats (like not every raider you stab with a scalpel exploding into a haze of blood and limbs). I'll add a few screenshots to show you what I mean.

It also adds a fun new option for cybernetic upgrades to various bodyparts (weight allowance increase, limb regeneration, etc). These are mostly convience upgrades and are generally pretty expensive and/or hard to find, so they supplement the game nicely. One of my favorite aspects of Project Nevada is the 'vision' effects you get from headgear you wear, though. Wearing a motorcycle helmet for protection will give you more or less what you'd expect to see. Same for broken glasses - you'll see breaks and cracks in the glass as they wear. Pics attached. The coolest thing is that advanced stuff like power armor gives you a similar "head in armor" vision and comes with - oh yes - heat vision, night vision. :twisted: And power armor users energy cells, as it should!

Other things that PN adds...a sprint option that drains your AP (real sprint). You can even use it to knock over opponents if you're strong and/or fast enough. What more? Explosives hotkey. Don't have to go through the menu to equip a grenade anymore. Weapon hotkeys. And perhaps most importantly for the fighting-style characters: bullet time! Instead of having to go into VATS, you can slow down time a little with your AP in order not to 'break' combat immersion. My current character is not a very good fighter so I don't have much use for those yet, but even the little I use is a WORLD of difference. Oh, also, improved zooming with scoped weapons. You get a few 'steps' now.

In addition to all that goodness, I've installed Nevada Skies which basically gives the wasteland a better color tone and adds in many different weather effects. Rain, thunderstorms, sand storms, and rad storms...those are amazing: you can barely see shit anymore. You either quickly find a place inside and sit it out, or you risk running blindly into a nest of deathclaws. Oh and it has a +4 rad/per second effect too, so if you're caught in the middle of the wasteland with no direction or nearby place to coordinate to on your pip boy, you're fucked if you don't have rad-x or radaway with you. :) With the Power Armor vision you can at least still see enemes in a rad storm, really neat. The nights are also much darker with this mod, as you'd expect on a moonless night in a wasteland.

Also got a pip-boy mod that reskins the pipboy according to the old-school Fallout style. Pic attached as well. I forgot to mention that PN also restyle the GUI into something a lot sleeker. Screenshots will show what I mean. Last but not least, I also installed a mod that adds 4-5 new radio stations with new 50's music. Good times. And another thing I forgot to mention: PN also rebalances hardcore mode. So things like eating food become a lot more logical. If you eat, say, some fruit, you not only decrease your hunger but also slightly decrease thirst. But if you eat mac & cheese you'll actually dehydrate a little. Etc.

Before posting some screenshots, here's the 'launch trailer' for Project Nevada. I can guarantee you that this will cause you to spunk a little Derf. :)



P.S. apparently a version 2 has been released now, with other pimp stuff like implants that allow you to scan enemies and assessing their strength/danger. And there still other rebalancing mods out there that are too far out for me but may please some people. Realistic (long) reloading times on some weapons, rebalancing, etc.

Looks good man, but I'd need something that turns the game back into something a tad more "sandboxy" ie, remove the main quest in large part and have the game run itself in some kind of STALKER game with a large-world and scavenger element to it.

The glory of Fallout for me is wandering the waste, squinting as you pick something up in the hot windy deserty distance, whip out your almost-broken binoculars and make out a quiet and innocent looking abandoned shack, hoping that you'll be able to find cans of food, supplies, some ammo and heck, maybe even a pistol. Knowing that perhaps instead the shack will be booby trapped and filled with skeletons of the previous would-be looters, so you consider whether to go in pistol-drawn or not.

I'll add to my watch/want list though. :P

The booby trap momentys and/or unexpected encounters in the wasteland do happen in NV, but yeah not to the extent that you would like I think. :) Honesly, what you described sounds like Day Z! I doubt there's gonna be a NV mod to take away the quests, enlarge the wasteland and put tons of random survival stuff in there so yeah I don't really expect you to go back to it. :)

Still, this mod is goddamn impressive. It turns the 'vanilla' combat and immersion into something visceral and fast-paced and is so customizable...very cool. I've had some really cool moments with it already where my armor helmet either broke or ran out of energy cells in the dark...shit gets scary real quick. :P

After playing the game with the mods and enjoying much of it, I pretty much made it to the end of the 'main story' of the vanilla game and started the DLC.

Started with Dead Money, the first DLC. Was surprised at the quality on the voice work and the writing, and the setting (the Sierra Madre Casino, trapped in a sort of radioactive cloud) was really neat too. Cool characters as well. But there are some problems with it. For one, the game takes away all your shit at the beginning. That doesn't HAVE to be a problem afaic, but the way they did it wasn't ideal. It also has only one or two real types of enemies, with one of them being excruciatingly annoying (hard to kill, spear-chucking limb crippling zombie-like things that hit like a mack truck). Since I'm playing hardcore mode I need a doctor's bag every time I want to heal a crippled limb. While those are quite easily attainable, you still have to walk a lot and having your leg(s) crippled for the umpteenth time and crawling around like a loser gets old pretty quickly. :P There's also a mechanic with a suicide collar and radio interference in there that has you scoping out radios and shooting them before you blow up, which is cool in the first 30 minutes but gets annoying real fast after that.

Conclusion: enjoyable, but with some annoying aspects.

Then I started Honest Hearts, the second DLC, and what a lolfest that was: it starts by travelling along with a caravan from the Mojave wasteland to the grand canyon areas, where the Mormon survivalists live in a city called Zion (apparently). So, you arrive, and the caravan gets ambushed - scripted. Within 30 seconds all the caravaneers are dead except me. I'm in fully repaired BOS armor, with a kick-ass tri-laser rifle, so I rape the rest of the tribal ambushers. I get to a bridge, kill some more guys, and just continue to go ahead because there isn't anything else I can seem to do. Keep walking, keep getting attacked by tons of people (monsters, animals, tribals) and I'm like "shit I'm almost running outta ammo, they sure made this first part of the DLC long and tough". After continuing in what seemed the only real direction I get a quest marker on my map, walk over there. Walk through a small canyon where I'm attacked by 'named' NPC's, who are aggressive for no apparent reason. I walk on a little, find the map for the way back to the Mojave Wasteland at a tribal camp, walk back to the passage to the Mojave...and I get the voice over/history for the DLC. I was like WTF. I just walked through canyons, had to shoot a lot of shit, named NPC's too, found a map and walked back. Took me 20-30 mins. Turns out...ONE of the (named) NPC's near the attack on the caravan in the beginning is actually fighting the guys attacking you, and non hostile. Since he is a tribal (just a slightly different looking tribal), I shot at him during the initial attack, killed him and broke the questline. Lmao. I mean, that's pretty lousy design. (I check online, lotsa people did the same thing) I don't really care that much - it's still a 'story' of sorts: I got ambushed, shot a potential ally in the heat of battle, then scrambled through the canyon living off fruit and water from the river, found a map back home and survived on my own. But it's a pretty major bummer in terms of not having actually seen anything other than canyons and not having done any quests. I may go back with an old save later.

Conclusion: lol @ design, but could be fun. hard to tell given what happened to me.

Still other two DLC (Old World Blues and Lonesome Road) to go, and I just got the explorer perk so I'm definitely gonna wander around the Wasteland randomly a bit too.
