As Ox has mentioned, I got Dragon Age because it was on sale. I'm playing a Dalish Elf Rogue. I still haven't made it out of the origin story (just hit level 2) so there's not much to tell as yet. I am enjoying the game, though.

I've made it to the first town after the battle in the beginning. I think I've done most of the quests there and am about to move on. It's fun... it kinds reminds me of the witcher in parts, except I have a party. :P It's also fairly difficult, even on normal. I've hit level 7, but can't choose a specialty yet...or focus or whatever it's called. I'm using Morrigan and Allister mainly... alternating between the dog and the other rogue chick, whatever her name is.

btw, allister is a horrible name for a warrior. I always think he should be a mage.

The specialisations are unlocked either by talking to people or buying a manual. For the rogue i suggest assassin as a must. You get one active skill and three passive ones which dont require upkeep and help with damage.

At level 7 you get the first point which you could spend if the class was unlocked and at level 14 you get the second point.

EDIT: and he is Alistair, http://dragonage.bioware.com/characters/alistair

Satis, you and your silly satanistic references. :p

Like Peltz said, you have to learn specializations from characters or (expensive) manuals. Some are rather obscure (Blood Mage/Reaver), others are extremely accessible. I personally only had 5 of all 12 specializations available to me after my first playthrough, because I didn't get along with some characters and never bought any of the manuals. Didn't mess me up though, so don't worry.

Also, re: that storage chest in the base camp...it's not a cheat, seriously. By the end of the game I had 20+ items in there that I kept around 'just in case' with an inventory limit of 80 or so. Even if I had expanded it by buying the bags I'd still have run out of space all the time. The storage chest is just easier. You can pick a chest somewhere in Denerim and stock it with your stash for all I care, but that means running over there and back all the time. The chest is nearby and at hand (and you can only access your basecamp when travelling on the world map anyway, which is rarely because you can't directly go to world map from most areas). But hey, feel free to not install it. :)

Thanks for allowing my that freedom, Ox.

I guess I need to poke around in this town a bit. I plan on picking up Ranger first as my specialty. That was the whole point of my character and all the points I've been pouring into the archer tree. :P I think there's a decent chance I'll replay this with a different character, probably a mage type. We'll see.

Oh oh can i give you a heads up on picking the ranger talent. Its not quite what you think it is :D.

EDIT: Oh never mind, just save before you invest :D

oh great, now I'm concerned. Does the ranger not have anything to do with shooting bows and being one with the animals? Not in the way that Ox is one with the animals, of course.

I read archery class are weak and melee is a must. Even if you go for archery your going to need to be doing some melee. What I read.

What Peltz meant was that their only additonal skills (that come with being a ranger) is a tree that allows you to summon animals to your aid. Apart from that you pretty much fill in the rest by shooting bows and prancing around using survival skill etc. ;) You don't get better at archery because you have ranger as an expertise, basically.

It's a good specialization tho.

Archery is ok, just don't rely on it too much (as 11b said). Some archery skills like scattershot, pinning shot and slaying arrow are incredibly useful, you just need to use them in the right combination with other peep's skills.

:P @ the chest thing. Was afraid that'd sound nazi, but whatever right. :)

heh, whatever... if I decide to put a chest in my camp, so be it. I'm still figuring the game out.. I don't want to alter it before I fully grok the original.

Anyway, I went from the town to the forest with my fellow elves. More of a random thing than anything... I wasn't entirely sure where I needed to go next, so I just chose what sounded the most fun (evil forest). Is it me, or are quests in this game a bit lacking in direction?

It feels like that at first but midway through you starting figuring out the quest system and it gets easier to figure out what they want you to do.

Whats different is some quest have multiple task and you can complete the quest without having completed every task. Some task are scripted and have requirements for that part of the quest to trigger. If you dont meet the reqs you just move on. I know one part of a quest require me to gets some papers in a locked room and I didnt have a character with high enough skill to pick the lock but I skipped it and still finished.

Yeah, at first you're pretty much wide open where you want to go, which may seem a bit overbearing. Most people tend to go with "their own" first, ie Orzimmar for a dwarf, forest for a Dalish, Circle of Magi for a mage, etc., which makes sense.

The forest and its surrounding areas are very large, so just make sure you're prepared to venture in deeply (because backtracking is a must if don't, no fast travel once you're in deep). Enjoy. :P

Found the "dragon" in the forest and put it down after a try or two. This game is difficult. I can't imagine playing it on hard. Ox must've been one frustrated bastard.

Anyway, my inventory filled up so I backtracked and sold my crap and am going back in again. I've been carrying around myself, allistair, morrigan and the rogue chick, whatever her name is. I can also summon a wolf now.

I position my archers with morrigan behind them at the end of some distance, then run either the wolf or allistair to draw aggro. I can usually pelt the crap out enemies with arrows... singly they just die most of the time before they get to me. It's been fairly effective.

BTW, the whole injury thing is pretty annoying. I wish I could make something that would fix it, rather than having to buy injury kits. I swear, half my party has broken arms or concussions.

I completely agree. Having to rely on "kits" or "potions" feels like such a bad game mechanic to me. Hate it.
