Maybe Ox can help with this.

Below is the trade offer i got. In monetary terms it is so badly in my favor that it makes me think its a scam.

I checked the market prices and my skins are worth about 0.12€. He is offering about 0.50€ in cards.

I noticed there's a Steam Holiday Auction started (today?), maybe something to do with that?

Can't recycle CSGO items into gems so their value shouldn't change. Anyway I decided to take the cards and see what happens. Its 12 €cents and some self respect only so f*** it.

I don't really understand this Steam Trading thing, I mean why are these digital emblems worth money? Do they do something? I'm such a steam noob haha.

Well you can trade the cards for steam money and buy games with it but its very low profit unless you really really commit to it and even then an average beggar beats you by a mile in terms of money earned per hour. Mostly its just about a discount. It makes games a small % cheaper.

I think one journalist summed it up pretty well. After 4hours of scheming and trading he had made a whopping 15$ from trading. Which was about 5 to 10 minute income on his regular job.

In reply to your question Peltz, I think it was just someone who really wanted those weapon skins and didn't really know the value of the cards. I can't think of any way he could scam you with that deal. :-)

However as Ganz pointed out, there is currently a holiday auction thing going on; in which players use gems to bid on games. The gems are created by converting some tradables like trade cards and steam backgrounds etc you have lying around in your inventory. This way Valve gets people to recycle the items they don't want or can't sell to anyone.

On the first day of the auction someone bought all three of the items I had on sale for months for 0.03 euro (lowest possible price listing to make a profit on). To convert into gems of course. So if you want to get rid of useless cheap items in your inventory, now is the time to put them on sale. :)

So in Peltz' case it was obviously a complete coincidence, because he got a lot of things he can craft into gems for some things that can't be crafted into gems.
