I think i've given up on games in general now. I dont have steam anymore (and dont miss it) and thats a good indicator that i think ive had enough of games. theres nothing I can get into anymore, and there hasn't been for a long while. my last straw was the Jagged Alliance Flashback kickstarter (which i pledged toward) and it totally fucking bombed. The power of the jade is too much. besides, porn is way more entertaining.

Just wait until I gift you Serious Sam 3 during the christmas sale and we fun-game it in co-op mode. Your jade will melt like snow in the sun. :)

But yeah, I take a very different approach to games than 5-10 years ago now. I sample them more and see if I like what I'm tasting...if not I just stop and uninstall and never look back. Happens more than you might think.

Actually just finished Warhammer 40k: Space Marine after a friend recommended it to me. Nothing special, but really enjoyable and polished 3rd person shooter. I don't dislike the warhammer 40k universe either. It was also just long enough to stay interesting, no drawn out mechanics or story BS.

Might play season 2 of the Walking Dead next, we'll see.

Here, SS3 might be fun :)

To illustrate how things have changed, i was considering whether a console would make sense.

I think there are businesses that rent out consoles. Might consider it if there's only a handful of games you want to try.

I think on the money he's making now he can afford to buy a console. :P Jesus Peltz, renting consoles, what is this 1997? :D

I remember renting VCR players from the video rental place. Neither exist anymore. So old.

Lol, quiet you.

So you liked Walking Dead? I forced myself through a few of the chapters for Season 1 and I just can't get interested in it. :/ It's just boring to me. I prefer more interactivity.

I finished Metro: Last Light. Meh. Not really impressed, but I still feel a strong urge to complete games I've started. I've started on XCom: Declassified. I'm hopeful at this point. It has the potential to be pretty amazing, but I suspect it's not going to live up to its potential. Other that that, Star Wars just launched its expansion, so I'm levelling my 15 toons to level 60 now. That'll keep me mildly interested for another month or two as I try out all the new content.

So... I can't bring myself to finish many game any more. I just get bored and/or annoyed. Walking dead is about to get uninstalled, since it's been sitting on my hard drive unplayed for probably a year now. I tried playing Arma II, got annoyed with the poorly structured and confusing missions, and removed it. Currently playing Arma II: Operation Arrowhead, as I heard it was much better. We'll see.

I played Spec Ops: The Line. That I finished. It was actually not what I expected. I was expecting a brainless shooter for some reason, but it ended up being pretty twisted. Even when the shooting started to get annoying (last level, hello) I stuck with it for the plot. Bizarre.

I'm starting to tire of Kerbal Space Program, but I'm well over 140 hours into it, so that's pretty impressive. After I return my Kerbals from Jool after a ridiculous mission, I may begin a new game with mods to make the game more deadly and realistic. We'll see.

Played This War of Mine... yea, that game is just not my speed. I understand the point, but it's kinda frustrating to try scraping by only to have all your people starving to death, or have your crap ganked by bandits, or whatever. I haven't removed it yet, but that's probably coming.

Xcom: declassified had a lot going for it, but then it got stupidly difficult toward the end. Uninstalled after the 15th wipe. Plus the developers just failed to live up to the potential.

Tried Wallace and Grommit, but it's kinda like Walking Dead. I'm not into the marginally-interactive story telling genre. I have a few more games like that as well that will probably all get shuffled into a Steam category I'll never touch. C'est la vie.

Star Wars: The Old Republic I'm taking a break from. A bit burned out on the content and the people. I may come back or I may quit permanently. Shiny's already asking me what the next MMO is. I have no clue. Finding a good MMO is no mean feat.

Anyway, what about you guys? Any games I shouldn't be missing out on? BTW, I'm totally taking a pass on Grand Theft Auto V. Part IV was really disappointing, and I'm kinda sick of Rockstar's half-assed PC ports.

I'm very much like you these days Satis, I've always been bad for not finishing games but that's because I'd get distracted by a new one, these days it's because I don't find many worth persisting with. I'm currently playing Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Not an MMO I envisioned playing but tried the beta and it was just fun so been addicted to that for ages. Also been back and forth on WoW but that's getting old now. I did try Elder Scrolls Online and enjoyed it but only played the first month that was "free" with buying the game. It's going sub-free though (may have already gone?) so it might be worth you trying that out - it's obviously not as in-depth as normal TES games but I still enjoyed the exploration side of things and the combat is tougher than most MMOs as it has an element of skill to it, rather than just having your hot bar of skills and relying on your level. It also looks good and has a good crafting system plus the PvP is supposed to be quite interesting if you like that. Also I believe they're putting in thieving/murder/crime in general though I've only been told about this and not read any of it myself so don't know what it consists of.

Other than that technically I'm playing Inquisition but not touched it in nearly 2 months as the bugs and crappy patches from Bioware are really pissing me off; the game itself is really good it's just plagued with annoyances. And that's about it. I'm getting Pillars of Eternity when that comes out in a couple of weeks, other than that... nada. Nothing really peaking my interest this year.

Haven't (or barely) touched games for months now. And still have games waiting to be played for probably a couple of years now.
Not sure if that's going to change soon though.

God. Do games just suck now, or are we getting old? Ugh. I'm too immature to get old.

So, yea, Operation: Arrowhead uninstalled. Walking Dead uninstalled.

I forgot about Banished. That's fun, but it's starting to get kinda old. I don't think it has much life left in it.

I installed Darksiders, which I apparently bought like 16 months ago and never played. Meh. Not my kind of game. I'll play it for a bit more and see if I get hooked, but I doubt it.

Played Prison Architect a bit. I may go back to that. I dunno. It's a bit lacking in direction, which is kinda the point, but when your guards stand around and let all your inmates run away because you didn't put fences up... bleh.

Rogue legacy is fun, oddly enough. I've sunk 32 hours into that. Maybe because I can play for a bit, then quit with no real feelings one way or another. :p

And lastly, I have Surgeon Simulator installed. I don't know what to say about that one. I doubt it will survive much longer.

I've basically been trying to find something to do other than Star Wars: The Old Republic. I even started watching Attack on Titan (the anime series) on Netflix. *shrug*

I remember enjoying Assassin's Creed Black Flag. But you have to do the optional content in one go or it breaks the game apart. The pauses in the story become so big you'll feel disconnected from the story.

That's one of the last games on steam i've actually played and enjoyed. Probably because it is kinda casual as you say.
Just checked: 41 hours played, last played 22/08/2014.
(mm has it really been that long .. wow)

Did you ever play Faster Than Light (FTL)? It's good as well... I've sunk quite a few hours into it. It's also good for small, bite-sized chunks.

I'm playing Borderlands 2 now. I'm actually really liking it, more than I thought I would. It requires a bit more of a time investment, though.

Yup i have FTL. I think i made it to the 'boss battle' but didn't have enough fire power.
So that's still waiting to be finished as well.

Post Re: What are you playing now?
Here to weigh in and say the same thing, I don't finish (or like) that many games I start anymore. I think it's a combination of a few things:

- deep digital discounts have made games less of an investment and more of a throwaway product. When you pay 50 bucks for a game you're expecting to be awesome you're going in with some incentive to try (and keep trying), even if you don't necessarily think it's a great game. When you buy a game for 3-5 bucks it's easier to tell yourself 'look, you're not enjoying this, just stop'.

- games being filled up with filler. Scavenger hunts (Batman games), endless side missions (GTA games), long 'cinematic' parts (Homefront) etc. Not that this is an entirely new thing, but still, developers are banking on it more than ever.

- getting older/more jaded/having less time and/or more other priorities

- getting better at recognizing BS

For me personally, I still enjoy (and finish) a lot of the games I play, but I do notice that my preference seems to shift from longer, free-form and very attention-demanding games to smaller games where the stress is not so much on keeping you engaged for an enormous period of time by artificially stretching the game's concept. Better to do something small really well than to create a sprawling universe of possibilities of which 70% make you fall asleep after two hours. Like you guys I also start to like games that I can just pick up and play and then leave for a while a lot more. A puzzle game like Sokobond is perfect for a short gaming session like that.

Let's see, what have I played recently...

Transistor - incredibly stylish game - definitely recommended. Doesn't overstay its welcome.

The Walking Dead Season 2 - not as good as season 2, but definitely had me hanging on.

To The Moon - fuck, this game tore my heart out. In a good way!

Duke Nukem Forever - I kinda expected it to be better than people said, but...no. It actually IS a very mediocre game building on some outdated mechanics + console limitations. Also, the 'adult' humor wasn't actually funny but extremely cringeworthy. It didn't even get the parody right. I finished it, because it was short, but it definitely wasn't something I would recommend. More of a masterclass in how to fuck up a franchise.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II + expansions: very competent and enjoyable RTS games. I checked out halfway the last expansion because they were reusing the same maps and triggered events, but otherwise very good games

Sokobond (still playing) - very relaxing puzzle game with inspiration taken from chemistry. Definitely recommened. Most puzzles are hard enough to break your head over for a while, until you try them again a day later and solve them in 2 minutes. Good stuff.

Recently bought during the Ubi sale on Steam: Blood Dragon (looks awesome, but requires Uplay) and Valiant Hearts.

Btw Satis, you're absolutely right that a 'game' like TWD is more like an interactive movie than anything else, but I personally enjoy them a lot (also see The Wolf Among Us). I think I just go in with the mindset of being in a movie, while downing a bottle of wine. :) Did you know about the Game of Thrones series Telltale are doing now? Looks interesting.

For some reason I hated Rogue Legacy. I loved the concept (still do), but I fucking sucked at it so badly. Yet every friend I have who's played it loves it way more than they expected. Strange stuff.

Post Re: What are you playing now?
There are plenty of people that like the Telltale type games, and that's cool. It's not for me, though. I just can't get invested in game where I spent more time watching than playing, I guess. I dunno.

Regarding Rogue Legacy, it's really frustrating at first, since you die so quickly and easily. However, the difficulty level declines pretty quickly as you unlock new classes and various upgrades. For instance, spelunkers give you a bonus to cash, which can let you unlock a bunch of stuff next time you die. Dragons are also insane for getting cash, but there's a pretty big investment before you can even unlock them.

I was playing the lich and dragons almost exclusively and unlocking health, toughness, etc upgrades, then played one of the more tank-type classes because I happened to not get a good set of offspring. I was shocked to discover I had 500 health and was very, very durable. I think it helps that it was my go-to game when I became too intoxicated to reliably play less forgiving games like Kerbal Space Program.
