Before there was the new X-com game, there was a small team working very hard on a spiritual successor to the X-com series. It was a bit of a bummer for them that none other than Firaxis got to make a new X-com game after they'd long started, but they're still going strong and working towards release. The development of the game is in the final stages, but they now turned to Kickstarter for a 'mere' 50k (like I said, the basic game is funded already) to add a lot of goodies and polish for it. Not a bad idea, really. They even have an (alpha) demo up there so at the very least you know you're not getting superscammed if that's your worry.
