I'm not sure if you noticed but whenever there is a discussion about the russians going on the Estonians always speak up and urge to consider them as unreliable partners. I'm pretty sure we as a nation always speak up against them. When learning about Estonia or trying to understand the mentality of Estonians it's always a good idea to start from the following.

http://estonia.eu/about-estonia/history ... 1940s.html

Quote:
In the summer of 1940 the Soviet Union occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as a result of the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union on 23 August 1939. In the aftermath of World War II, Estonia lost approximately 17.5% of its population.

Quote:
The deportation was demanded by the Communist Party in order to complete collectivisation and “eliminate the kulaks as a class”. Nearly a third of those declared to be “kulaks” managed to evade their captors. In the words of Party Secretary Nikolai Karotamm, other families were “grabbed” in order to “fill the quota.”

Another anniversary for this event is today, 25th of March.

And the sad part is that in comparison to the things that russians have done to their own people its but a small tragedy.

But to leave a more cheerful mood, I attached a picture taken from our local newspaper some years ago from the anecdote section
and the translation goes like this.

Where do Adam and Eve originate from? From Russia of course. Hungry and butt-naked, barely an apple to share between the two
and still they insist that they live in a paradise.

Was the deportation ultimately a method to control the Estonian state as a whole after annexation?

Probably, they did stick around for 50 years after "liberating" Estonia. They took some people away and brought in russians. And as you know, they will use any means and excuse necessary to protect russians in other countries, even military invasion (Georgia-Russia war in 2008).

So it's pretty much like choosing the "enslave" option when you take a settlement in Rome Total War.
