*The RV FLIP looks like it might be an April Fool, but it as been working hard for more than 50 years
*The 355-foot vessel can flip 90 degrees in 20 minutes allowing researchers a unique opportunity to study the ocean
*The vessel does not have its own form or propulsion and relies on tugs to tow it to the area of study
*The RV FLIP was commissioned in 1962 and can sit still in heavy seas with more than 300 feet beneath the waves

haha, you hater. :D

But fair enough, I can see the author's point. Although I don't agree that peer reviews are the golden standard of scientific progress, necessarily. Many of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of our time have been mercilessly destroyed by peer reviews, and the reason is pretty simple: if you devoted your entire life to theory X, you don't want a person coming up with a (fairly) simple idea Y completely dismissing everything you've ever worked for. It's a very human reaction. A lot of great scientists died clinging to obsolete theories, even when a new one was available.

Having said that, I find it encouraging that Andraka himself acknowedges the fact that he was a bit too enthusiastic in his research or at least the way he talked about it. Makes sense. When I was a teenager, I didn't know wtf I was doing, let alone science. I probably wouldn't even have admitted that I jumped the gun. :D
