haha, you hater. But fair enough, I can see the author's point. Although I don't agree that peer reviews are the golden standard of scientific progress, necessarily. Many of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of our time have been mercilessly destroyed by peer reviews, and the reason is pretty simple: if you devoted your entire life to theory X, you don't want a person coming up with a (fairly) simple idea Y completely dismissing everything you've ever worked for. It's a very human reaction. A lot of great scientists died clinging to obsolete theories, even when a new one was available. Having said that, I find it encouraging that Andraka himself acknowedges the fact that he was a bit too enthusiastic in his research or at least the way he talked about it. Makes sense. When I was a teenager, I didn't know wtf I was doing, let alone science. I probably wouldn't even have admitted that I jumped the gun. |
