check this out....

22,000 people in London now have closed circuit television feeds from about 400 cameras broadcast into their homes. Sit on your couch and watch the world. The byword is "fighting crime from the sofa". Soon it will be rolled out to everyone over there.

So, now you have the populace watching the populace and calling any 'violations' into the police, I'm sure. England continues to lead the way into a surveillance future.

And thanks to the EU, the American Gestapo will soon have access to all data on my phone calls, sms' and emails!

All in the name of the war on terror off course.

Wasn't the war on terror to protect our freedom of speech and freedom to practice different religions?
Or am I missing the post-9/11 plot here?

It's not a war on terror, it's a war on personal freedom. :) Anyway, it's always been the same... 1% of the world's population control the other 99%. This is just another extension of that. History usually ends up with that 1% stepping just a bit too far, the other 99% get mad, usually ending with 1% being killed. Then another 1% rise up and begin the process all over again.

The only thing I guess it's is invasion of privacy, but then (even with regard to the sims and emails) techinchally, they're only looking for "the bad stuff" so in theory, none of us should have a problem with it.

There's a mayor error in your reasoning. What's bad stuff? Are you sure your government in 20 years time defines the same things as bad as they do now? How many Germans living in the late 1920's do you think thought that the Nazi's would rise to absolute power within a decade?

I wouldn't call that a Major error with my reasoning, I'd call that a major error with our society/governments.

Things like this happening is not the fault of the evil nature of society or mankind, it's because people think: "It won't be that bad.", untill they get up one day and it's too late to change the course.

So it's still the fault of our society/governments.

Post subject:

No, it's yours and mine because we're to lazy to do anything about it. We are the society, and if something bad happens with it it's our own fault.

woo, go Arathorn!

There are two major flaws to your argument, Mole.

#1 : if you're not doing anything wrong, then why should you be worried?

By this reasoning, it would then be ok for secret police to search you randomly and at will? How about break into your house and go through all your stuff? How about they just come in and take your computer so they can make sure there's nothing illegal on it? As long as you're not doing anything wrong, it's ok?

#2: it's not your fault. :) It's all of society's fault. Sitting back and complacently letting a government go totalitarian is noone's fault but the people. All it takes is for 10% of the populace to get really loud, and any government will run away in fear. In US history, the million man march is a good example. That was the whole black equality thing in the 60s if you're not up on US history. If it had been 1,000 people, or 500 people, those fools would've gone to jail. But with a million (or close to, or whatever), they just got alot of attention and pretty thoroughly cowed the government.

:)

Also, with the NSA program in the USA, it violates our 4th ammendment. Normally when wire tap is done, its done to a suspect who is believed to be part of a crime. In this case, the NSA program is doing a blanket search of all Americans which means we potentially are all terrorist. We are all guilty.
