A renowned U.S. scientist who has documented fertility and sex changes -- including decreasing penis size -- due to environmental contamination says he wouldn't apply pesticides on his own lawn.

Delivering a special series of lectures this week at the University of Western Ontario, Louis Guillette has been drawn into London's lawn-care debate during question periods and talk-show interviews.

"The use of these compounds just for cosmetic reasons, just because you don't want to make dandelion wine from your yard or whatever, I think is inappropriate," Guillette, who is associate dean for research at the University of Florida, said in a lecture yesterday at UWO's Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Based on his own scientific investigations, Guillette said there's enough evidence pesticides put children, wildlife and the ecosystem at risk.

"Just because you can go buy them at the local stores doesn't meant that is appropriate use," he said.

A zoologist, Guillette has spent the last decade studying the influence of environmental contaminants on fetal development and reproductive systems of wildlife and humans, including the differences between alligators living in contaminated Florida lakes and those in cleaner ones.

He found abnormalities in sex organs, dramatic differences in egg-hatching rates and hormone levels.

Penis size of the animals from the polluted lake was smaller than animals from the less-polluted lake.

"This is important because it is not just an alligator story. It is not just a lake story. We know there has been a dramatic increase in penile and genital abnormalities in baby boys," Guillette said.

A followup study by another scientist involving healthy couples with 5,000 healthy babies also found reduced penis size with higher contamination levels.

"Are (their penises) so small they are actually having problems? We don't know. These are baby boys," he said.

But rodent studies have indicated more difficulty with fertility and other aspects later on, he said.

The researchers also found the alligators from contaminated water had abnormal ovaries. Some of the abnormalities were traced to chemical compounds with estrogen, a sex hormone. Estrogenic-type compounds are found in some pesticides, including atrazine, mostly widely used in North America for weed control.

Guillette said he doesn't support a total pesticide ban, saying their use is proper for public health and probably in agriculture. But when people can reduce their exposure they should, he said.

Lol. Is it me or is every topic we started lately about penises?

I'm just curious what the physical process is that causes penises to be smaller when exposed to pesticides at a young age? I mean, it doesn't seem to make lungs smaller, or bigger... nor brains, nor livers, not kidneys, etc etc. Just penises? wtf? Why the penis!? Is it a weed?

At any rate, I can say that, if pesticides negatively affected the growth of my wangus, women were very lucky. Unfettered in my natural growth, I would have torn them asunder.

Heard this before. Might have been more on the impotence side of things though.

Good question Satis....maybe nature is playing a cruel jokes on some dudes by making them hung like a squirrel. Because I think women's breast size is still steadily expanding, could be that that's just in Europe tho. (different cultures) So wtf? Surely a logical process would make stuff shrink in women too. :)

Anyhoo...I wonder about the part in the story

Wtf? Just how small are we talking here? Microscopical?

P.S. ever noticed how fat dudes have small dicks? It's really remarkable :P

Ox looks at fat men's penises.

Anyway, yea, breast size is increasing. I've heard it blamed on the hormones we feed animals to make them grow faster (like beef and chicken and whatnot). But who really knows. All I know is when I was 15, chicks looks like girls...now I've seen 15 year olds that look like women. Thankfully Shiny keeps me busy or I might end up in jail.

Heh i won't start commenting on standing in front of a class and thinking to yourself "Damn HOW old are they ... i never would have guessed".
Did i mention summer is finally coming through as well?

Btw don't worry about me getting in trouble, the school where i'm standing now totals the amazing amount of 2 girls .. none of them are in my classes. So i'm safe .. and my gf keeps me busy as well of course.

mm maybe i should get her a schoolgirl uniform .. :P

yea, I know. Sounds like a school built specifically to torture young males.

It's prolly a remnant of an all-boys' school...

10 years ago or something they officially abandoned schools that were ony accessible to girls or boys over here. There already were quite a few mixed schools, but they existing schools often stuck to their old way of working.

So they installed a law and now every school is officially mixed and must take in boys and girls. But because of the 'idea' of "oh, it's a boys'/girls' school' still lingering in ppl's head they often don't send girls to a former boys' school and vice versa.

Because I am so old (:P) I remember that back in grade school my school was still boys only. Then high school was mixed. Suddenly there were girls! And they didn't like phys ed., and they wore bras, and they read sappy teenage novels! Quite the shock. :P I hated those goddamn 'teen' novels. Man, I swear you had to be retarded to like those...it was always the same teen angst drama. And they made you read them! well, at least they made you pretend you read them. I was every bit as fraudulent back then as I am now.

Erh...anyway. J might also be teaching in a technical school, there don't tend to be many girl mechanics.

I might add that I agree with the general sentiment of relatively young girls being scarily sexy. If I ever have a daughter, I'm gonna try to keep her chaste and normal. And it won't work.

But then I get to pull out a can of whoopass, Al Bundy style!! (on their boyfriends that is...not my sweet and innocent daughter :P)

Well, we are world leaders when it comes to tax evasion, child molesting and making a lot of noise between the French- and Dutchspeaking community, without enganging in a civil war. Yet. :)

Correctomundo!

Typical masculin courses/jobs that they're teaching there (electrotechnics, electromechanics, industrial science).
2 girls are in other classes, dunno which ones, maybe car related, could be wood .. who knows.
So don't blame the school, blame the girls for not wanting to follow these classes!

And Belgium behind? Psssh.

yea, my classes are like that. All the electrical engineering/networking/technology courses have like maybe 1 girl in them if I'm lucky. Usually it's all male.

On the other hand, when I took speech and economics and crap, it was mostly female. Maybe I should switch career paths. :p
