Post Why do people like widescreen?
I don't get it. Everywhere I look people are wanting wide screen this and that. I don't understand.

Surely, you'd rather see proportional images instead if strecthed ones? Why waste all the space at the top and bottom aswell? I mean?

heh, if you watch a widescreen film or tv show on your widescreen tv it generally uses most of the screen, and it's not distorted

if however you just watch normal tele then yes it is shrunk in the vertical direction

i think in america most tv is generally in widescreen format so they don't get this problem, though i may be wrong, ask Satis?

Widescreen TV is better because your eyes are like this 0----0 and the screen is like [-------]. Its easier for your eyes compare to watching square TV [--].

Secondly, it onlt squashes the images of non-widescreen transmissions. Like some TV stuff.

I think it has to do with how you set up your TV. If you set it up properly, all the screen should be filled and there should be no stretching.

Conclusion: Widescreen is a better concept.

even if the screen is completely full, you are still wasting space.

I could have a 20 inch accross and 15 inch high telly, or a 20x20 and have MORE TV!

what i'm saying is you might aswell have the square, in equal width to the widescreen and have Extra screen.

But that will a) cost you more, b) not be optimal for the positioning of your eyes.

Because with widescreen you see more of the shot. When a movie is made for the big screen it made in a widescreen format. When it goes to DVD or VHS they have to crop the ends of the movie out to make it fit your tv so you dont see all of the scene.

Yeah but if they filmed it differntly, and added the top and the bottom in, you'd see that that bitch in the picture is actually standing in the water.

Mole, slap yourself.

# Is the actual visual portion supposed to be so small?
Yes. There is an equal exchange: you lose some height, but you can see the entire movie as it was originally intended to be seen, although smaller than normal.

People call letterboxed videos "mangled". Is that true?
Once again, that is not true. Remember that letterboxed videos are showing the movies exactly as they were originally shown in theatres. Only the "pan-and-scan" versions are "mangled" because up to 50% of the actual video has been cut off.

That black space is nothing. There is nothing to fill in, when you see a movie in widescreen format you are seeing the whole picture from top to bottom, side to side. When you watch a movie in regular format you see all of the top to bottom frame and half of the side to side.

If you dont like the black box's buy a widescreen tv.

You cant fill the black part with movie because the movie was not filmed in that aspect ratio.
