The Guardian
Some of you might have heard about what "The Guardian" did? The Guardian is encouraging readers to write to individual voters in Cook County, Ohio USA. They are doing this because they are trying to convince undecided voters to vote for Kerry. Here are some of the letters written to Americans in Ohio.
Here is the original story the Guardian posted.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections20 ... 33,00.html
These are long and you can read them here.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections20 ... 66,00.html
Heres sample, now this is from Europeaons to Americans | | | | Quote: Maybe there's one good reason - just one - for re-electing George W Bush, and that's to force him to live with the consequences of his appalling actions, and answer for his own lies, rather than wish the job on a Democrat who will then get blamed for his predecessor's follies.
Probably no American president in all history has been so universally hated abroad as George W Bush: for his bullying unilateralism, his dismissal of international treaties, his reckless indifference to the aspirations of other nations and cultures, his contempt for institutions of world government, and above all for misusing the cause of anti-terrorism in order to unleash an illegal war - and now anarchy - upon a country that like too many others around the world was suffering under a hideous dictatorship, but had no hand in 9/11, no weapons of mass destruction, and no record of terrorism except as an ally of the US in a dirty war against Iran. | | | | |
Anyway, I think you get the drift. These ass bags are trying to influence our elections. And just as I suspected my America brothers and sisters who I love with all my heart responded back to the Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections20 ... 58,00.htmlMy Favorite

You could also have posted these for instance :
Right on! Just wanted to say thanks from California for your effort and concern. This IS a very important election ... There are so many people here in the States that care about the impact America has on the rest of the world. I am personally saddened for the loss of all innocent lives. The best statement Americans can make to the rest of the world is to not elect Bush for president. Thank you so much for getting involved in our world.
California
I am a student and life-long resident of Clark County, Ohio. I just wanted you to know that this is a wonderful idea you've initiated; people here love and respect the United Kingdom, especially the prime minister. I hope this campaign will be successful for your newspaper and for us voters.
Springfield, Ohio
Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a wonderful idea! I am a US citizen who is scared to death that Bush and Klan will get back in. We need all the help we can get to ditch this bunch of maniacs.
United States
....
There are always 2 sides, remember.
Btw i can understand that this meddling is offensive to many americans and i don't think it's a very good idea either.
I read something about the Bush biography today, written by some woman (journalist) who brings out "the dirt" on the Bush family (4 generations or so). Some points were very interesting. And shocking. Of course i realise that again it's only one side that she shows, namely the bad one. And probably every (american) politician has made some scandals. It's just that some people can get away with a lot.

I'm more in the 'get the fuck out of my politics' camp then the other one. Not that I love Bush (I certainly don't like either candidate) but I think it's pretty retarded to start a pro-Kerry campaign by nonAmericans. Bleh, why the hell do I care who you want as president? This is my country and I know wtf is going over here...you only have secondary sources.
It'd be like me sending letters to people in the Ireland to please support their local IRA branch.

Since America is the nr.1 power in the world, these elections will affect a lot of non-americans as well. And since Bush has proven already to be a moron and Kerry still has the benefit of doubt for us Europeans, the majority here hopes that Bush doesn't get elected.
And i don't like that supremacy-feeling that a lot of americans tend to have. You have an important role in the world but shouldn't act as the sole ruler. And history is important but should be used with care. Like "If it wasn't for America, you'd all be speaking German". I think many (american) people have the idea that America came to Europe's rescue out of goodness, kindness, nobility, .. . Me thinks that a lot of motives were out of fear, economics, selfpreservation, ... . But i'm not getting deeper into that. Just wanted to get this of my chest.
Anyway most of the quotes 11b selected are more retarted than the plan to try to convince people not to vote for bush. Like this post of the guy and his family that won't go to Britain ever because of this 'meddling'. Smallminded, that's all i can say about that.

It doesnt matter what you think, US bailed Europe out. End of story.
And how can you claim that you dont like the way some Amercians have a "supremcay-feeling" when you call us "smallminded" and the quotes I pulled "retarded" ? The way you make it sound is your intellectually supreme to us or the people I quoted. In fact evey Europeon I have ever talked to tends to have that sense of "I know better than you" attitude and its obvious that the Guardian feels the same way.
So to quote the so called "retarded" American

I said 'that part' was more retarded. In every country you have a variety of people (theoretically a Gauss-curve btw ) and since i haven't seen or heard of any studies that show a difference between Europe and America for this example i consider them pretty equal, an average american won't be superior towards an average european and vice versa. For instance i don't think that every American is a dumb, arrogant, inbreeding redneck.
I think it's unrealistic to think that by writing a total stranger in a different country a letter will make him change his mind. So you could also call the brits that wrote a letter idealistic, or smallminded.
And i still think that a man who refuses to visit a country based on 1 single 'bad' experience is smallminded. That's like not going to your favorite pub anymore because one occasional visitor spilled beer on your sweater.
And yes i feel a lot of these comments you selected are 'retarted'. Pick the first one for example. Oh yeah, he's got some strong arguments . All brits have yellow teeth. Insult insult insult.
So yes maybe i feel that most of these reactions are indeed made by people who i consider intellectually inferior. Throwing insults is easy and you don't have to think for that, trying to make a point with arguments is something i would respect.
Example: i feel most republicans are morons (overgeneralisation i know). You have shown an article some time ago about the stupid lawsuits in America that should be stopped, Democrats opposed this. So you gave me a bit insight in american politics, namely that also democrats are morons.
If you would have called me a fucker, we wouldn't have made any progress in the 'discussion' since i would still have the same information. That's why you need to have arguments.
Another example: i can't understand how many people here vote for the extreme right "Vlaams Blok". Most of them just answer with the known slogans 'own people first', 'away with foreigners', ... . But a few of them come up with arguments, so i respect their choice. For those others i have no respect, their just sheep blindly following the rest.

Vlaarms Blok, heheh. A little piece of european politics I was ignorant of until you people. hehe.
I'll agree with J that the letters posted were, for the most part, pretty lame. Lots of emotion, little content. However, as I said, I agree with the feeling. We are a sovereign nation and a sovereign people. Pleaes don't meddle in our affairs. You may not like Bush because of his foreign policy, but there's significantly more to a president of the US then his foreign policy. And despite what everyone screams about (both here and abroad) Bush's handling of especially 9/11 and also the aftermath was really not badly done. It would've been a trying experience for anyone in office, and he handled it admirably, I think. Now, I still don't like the guy, and I think he seriously needs some oratory speeches, but we could've done alot worse.
I say we cease argueing, though, and just invade Europe. Claim all of western europe as states and give you guys a vote. Don't like our politics? Fine. You're all citizens (btw, you get to pay American taxes now) and have an equal vote. Problem solved.

I agree on the 'not meddling' part, don't get me wrong. I barely know anything about belgian politics, i think that this applies for many people, in any country. Moreover the perception of ones political parties and politicians is highly influenced by media. In europe you have a strong anti-bush stream, maybe in the US you have a lack of criticism sometimes. Or too strong a lobby.
SO i don't have the arrogance to claim that i know enough about American politics to make a full judgement, as no non-American should have. I don't even feel i can make a full judgement in belgium.

W00t, American taxes! If we get to keep our social security and Uncle Sam jumps in for the deficit, then hell yeah! But you prolly meant on top of our own taxes.
Anyway...it's a lame plot of the Guardian and whatnot, heh. (aren't media supposed (big "supposed") to stay impartial anyways?) As many ppl 11bravo quoted state so eloquently; the American elections aren't my (direct) business. I personally do have a preference for Kerry over Bush, mostly cos I feel religion shouldn't play much of a role in state affairs. But I'm not going to write letters to ppl, the very idea is a major LOL.
But I'd also like to say that jealousy isn't the only reason why the US is currently disliked by so many ppl in the world. Saying "I don't care, we have the biggest army" will cut it for now of course, but in the end it will serve nothing but create even more dislike, and potentially more morons that believe the US to be the center of all evil. Bleh.
Oh, and I'm convinced that I'm intellectually superior to everyone you quoted up there, both the letter-writers and ppl that reacted. And to most ppl I meet. I rock. Carry on with the quoting tho, it's funny as hell. kinda like monkey-knife fights, but less messy.

With Western Europe being around 380 million voters and the US 290, I think it'd be an interesting social experiment, if a little hard to carry out. No doubt it would have funny consequences.

lol....that would be interesting. Of course, Europe wouldn't have a full vote until we had fully absobed them. And done our racial cleansing, of course. We don't want any eurotrash polluting our social security system. hehe. Oh, and all really hot european women get shipped to Texas for special work programs.
