Re: Cool Stuff
I've heard about their story a while ago, but it never stops to grip me.
Ignore the Jesus song on the end montage, but it's kinda fitting in the father-as-a-hero way.

Re: Cool Stuff
The Iron Curtain... it's meant as a vehicle defense weapon against rockets and such.

Re: Cool Stuff
here's a pretty cool article about some people building a clock to last 10,000 years. It's being bankrolled by Bezps (the amazon guy). Neat stuff on how to engineer a clock that'll actually run accurately for 10,000 years. http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/06/10000-year-clock

Man, when I used to play command and conquer I thought the Iron Curtain was some kind of sheild. I guess it kind of is, but a bit more high tech In the mean time, here is an awesome Final Fantasy VII stop motion fan project

Re: Cool Stuff
Yea, that was really good, other than the fact it was in Japanese and I have no clue about Final Fantasy.

Re: Cool Stuff
The clock story is amazing. With a little bit of luck tho, we'll all still know exactly why and how it was built in 4000 years. Iron curtain seems interesting, but strange that it hasn't been picked up by the mainstream warfare industry. That tells me there's something still not right about it, like practicality or cost-effectiveness. But I'll look into it. The stop-motion vid looked really well-made but I can't stand watching the full 8 minutes of FF big-sword-emo-man-girl fighting.

Well theres this thing about carrying around explosive stuff. And then theres the thing about carrying around explosive stuff. What if someone throws a rock at it just for fun at the base and you are standing next to this thing .

Re: Cool Stuff
Lol. Well i'll be damned. What's next, that bionic soldier suit they were working on a year or two ago? Of course, I think most 'attacks' in Afghanistan are actually bombings (road side bombs etc), so it may only really be useful in actual combat to protect vehicles. Btw, one thing that always bugged me about English is that it has no separate word for a terrorist act or 'attack'. In Dutch we have 'aanslag' and 'aanval' (literally: attack), which are very different words - you'll never hear someone use 'aanslag' for a military action, or 'aanval' for a terrorist bombing. Same for French, which has 'attentat' and 'attaque'. And German, with 'Attentat' and 'Anfall'. In English, the word 'attack' seems to be used all over the board, which is confusing and probably not even without psychological and semantic consequences. This bugged me more when I was still working as a translator though, since it could become very confusing for people reading a report when the word 'attack' is used all the time (since the reports often dealt with both terrorism and military actions). Maybe there IS or was a word for it in English, though, which I'm sure a native speaker would know better than me. But it has been obscured since 9/11 if it ever existed.

Re: Cool Stuff
I guess we just precede the word "attack" with "terrorist" and then at least for that paragraph we can assume that any reference or use of the word attack is actually 'Terrorist attack'. I want Geomagnetic eyes! GIMME.

Re: Cool Stuff
Good point. Still, I was arguing more the semantics of the thing - that, because of a lack of a singular word for it, a terrorist act is somehow equalled with a war act and is treated as such (like the US claiming fragging Bin Laden in Afghanistan was a justified act because of him being a 'commander' on a 'battlefield' rather than a criminal).
